Vila De Rei: Geodesy, Nature Trails and Water Landscapes
Accommodation in Vila De Rei
Vila De Rei combines exceptional geodesy, wooded water landscapes, historic paths and a distinctive local culture. Anyone planning a trip with a variety of experiences will find inspiration here for days spent between viewpoints, museums, river landscapes, hiking trails and regional cuisine. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can therefore first consider whether nature, local history, water or culinary discoveries should be the focus of your trip.
Geodesy and Panoramic Views as Special Points of Reference
A characteristic starting point is the Centro Geodésico de Portugal. From Vila de Rei, you reach the signposted turn-off on the road towards Sertã after 1.8 kilometres; from there, the route continues for another 900 metres. The Centro Geodésico de Portugal offers a 360-degree view of the Serra da Lousã and, in clear weather, of the Serra da Estrela. The site includes a themed exhibition room, a small auditorium, a souvenir shop and a bar.
The area's travel history can also be traced along the EN2: Vila de Rei is crossed by this road. At kilometre 369.6, the central point of the EN2 is located there together with the Centro Geodésico de Portugal. The Museu da Geodesia was opened in 2002 as part of a partnership between the Direção Geral do Território and the Câmara Municipal de Vila de Rei.
Nature Trails, Water and Observations
Several routes lead through very different landscapes for hiking. The PR4 – Caminho de Xisto de Água Formosa follows former paths used by millers and farmers along the Ribeiras da Galega and da Valada. The route is also suitable for birdwatching and for observing kingfishers and red squirrels. The PR5 – Rota do Bostelim follows the Ribeiras do Bostelim and da Isna to the centuries-old Ponte da Várzea Carreira. Proximity to the water, the shade of the trees and several sights characterise this route.
Another natural highlight is the Passadiços do Penedo Furado. In the area of Praia Fluvial do Penedo Furado, clear water flows through a natural rock fissure; there are also striking rock formations and waterfalls. The Passadiços form a circular route of approximately 2 kilometres, with Praia Fluvial do Penedo Furado recommended as the starting point. The fossil “Bicha Pintada” is also located along the route and, according to some scientists, is probably more than 480 million years old.
Praia Fluvial de Fernandaires lies on an extensive body of water fed by the Castelo de Bode reservoir and is surrounded by wooded mountains. There is a municipal landing stage for leisure and maritime tourism boats. The Miradouro de Fernandaires offers views of the Castelo de Bode reservoir, the village and Praia Fluvial de Fernandaires. At Pego das Cancelas, the Ribeira is rich in fish fauna, including barbel, bogue and bordal fish; paths through almost untouched woodland invite visitors to observe wildlife there.
History, Crafts and Regional Cuisine
Vila De Rei is also shaped by traces of gold mining. There are 45 Conheiras, or open extraction sites for alluvial gold. The PR6 – Rota das Conheiras leads to numerous piles of rounded stones from this extraction, which probably date from Roman times or an earlier period. Remains of extraction fronts that have probably existed since the Iron Age can also be seen. The Núcleo Museológico da „Antiga Cadeia de Vila de Rei“ includes the Sala da Cadeia, which complements the Museu Municipal.
In Água Formosa, you can expect houses built on the hillside, streets paved with schist and a medieval bridge. Local craft culture includes basket weaving, weaving, decorative arts, beekeeping, creative sewing and embroidery. The dishes served include cured meats, fresh and matured cheeses, honey, Sopa de Peixe and Bacalhau à Vila de Rei. The Fiestas of Rainha Santa take place every year in May in honour of Dona Isabel.
Tailoring Your Travel Plans to Your Own Interests
When choosing your holiday apartment, it is worth organising your preferred daily rhythm in advance. Nature enthusiasts can make a note of routes such as the PR4, PR5, PR6, Rota dos Miradouros, PR1 – Trilho das Casctas or PR3 – Trilho das Bufareiras. Also listed are the GR33 – Grande Rota do Zêzere, the GR44 – Grande Rota da Prata e do Ouro and the route along the Castelo do Bode reservoir. The Rota dos Miradouros uses QR codes with the GPS locations of the individual viewpoints. Anyone wishing to combine culture and landscape can include museum visits, Água Formosa and the water landscapes in a shared travel itinerary.
