Castelo Branco: Nature, Gardens and Embroidery

Castelo Branco brings together a geological landscape, garden art, embroidery and places where regional history comes to life. Jardim do Paço Episcopal is laid out in a rectangular design. Its main terrace features five basins with distinctive water displays. The geometric layout and individual basins give the garden a clear structure; the staircases have their own names and make it a place where garden art can also be discovered through specific details.

Bordado de Castelo Branco is an enduring symbol of the city; artisans continue to produce specialised embroidery. The craft also has economic significance, and embroidery production is concentrated in the Distrito de Castelo Branco. The Centro de Interpretação do Bordado traces the process from growing flax and weaving to silkworm farming and obtaining the raw material, through to the development of embroidery. Techniques, historical context and symbolism are also covered. The centre includes a museum, a shop and the Oficina-Escola de Bordado de Castelo Branco. This makes it possible to explore the subject through both its materials and production, and its cultural significance.

Museums, memory and music

The Centro de Interpretação Ambiental features 14 interactive exhibits about Parque Natural do Tejo Internacional and offers a virtual journey along the Tagus. This combines information about the protected area with a depiction of the river. Another historical highlight is the Museu Francisco Tavares Proença Júnior in the municipality of Castelo Branco: it was founded in 1910 by the archaeologist whose name it bears.

Casa da Memória da Presença Judaica commemorates the history of the Jewish people and the former Jewish community that lived in the city and contributed significantly to its commercial and economic development. In Lousa, the Viola Beiroa has accompanied the Dança das Virgens and the Dança dos Homens since the 17th century. These examples lead from the history of the city to a musical tradition associated with two named dances.

Throughout the year, the Museu do Canteiro hosts various temporary exhibitions on the theme of stone. The Exposição de Presépios is also held there every year during the Christmas season.
