Belmonte combines a distinctive history with experiences in nature and unusual insights into Jewish heritage, regional culture and former settlements. Anyone looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home for a varied trip can combine different interests here: castles and museums, historic paths, the Zêzere River, the Serra da Esperança and regional specialities.

The Castelo de Belmonte and the History of the Town

A starting point for exploring Belmonte is the Castelo de Belmonte. The castle dates from the 13th century. King Afonso V handed it over to Fernão Cabral I in 1466; it subsequently became the residence of the Cabral family. Today, the Castelo serves tourist and cultural functions and is highlighted as a significant attraction of the Estrela UNESCO Global Geopark.

The historic surroundings also include the Panteão dos Cabrais and the Igreja de Santiago. The Panteão adjoins the church and was still under construction in 1483. The Igreja Matriz de Belmonte provides a different historical perspective: it was inaugurated in 1940 and features revivalist and eclectic influences from the early 20th century. The Torre Centum Cellas, formerly also known as Torre de São Cornélio, is a unique stone monument in the Freguesia Colmeal da Torre in the Concelho Belmonte. The ruins have been classified as a national monument since 1927.

Jewish Heritage and Museums

Belmonte offers several ways to engage with Jewish history. The Museu Judaico displays objects from the Middle Ages to the 20th century that were used by Jews and New Christians in everyday life or in religious practices. The museum also has rooms for conferences and debates and offers cultural and academic initiatives on Jewish culture, Jewish heritage and the Jewish religion.

The Beit Eliahu Synagogue is a modern building and was inaugurated in 1996. The Jewish community of Belmonte has a resident rabbi; the synagogue is attended by practising Jewish women and men for weekly ceremonies and celebrations. For planning your trip, this creates a cultural focus that extends beyond individual historic buildings and includes religious life today as well as the history of the region.

Paths, Serra da Esperança and the Zêzere

Anyone who would like to combine culture with physical activity can include the AH Belmonte–AH Sortelha route in their plans. It leaves Belmonte through the public garden and passes, among other things, along Roman and medieval stone paths. The route is therefore particularly characterised by its historic sections; details regarding distance, duration or difficulty should be checked separately according to your specific daily itinerary.

The landscape also offers themes of its own. The Serra da Esperança is predominantly covered with shrub species, along with some pine forests. The Castro da Chandeirinha is located on this mountain range and provides evidence of the area's ancient settlement. The Zêzere River flows through Belmonte and shapes the ecology of this area. The Ecomuseu do Zêzere highlights the fauna and flora along the river's entire course and is housed in the Tulha dos Cabrais, which dates from the 16th to the 17th century.

Regional Themes for Different Days of Travel

For another perspective on local culture, the Museu do Azeite is a good choice. It explains olive oil production techniques, covers the annual cycle of olive cultivation and production, and explains the importance of olive oil to the local economy. The Museu do Território – Casa da Torre Caria was built at the beginning of the 14th century as a residence for the bishops of Guarda. The Museu dos Descobrimentos, also known as the “À Descoberta do Novo Mundo (DNM)” Interpretation Centre, deals with the discovery of Brazil.

Archaeological and culinary themes can also be included. At the Villa da Quinta da Fórnea, baths with traditional pools for bathing at different temperatures were excavated: a frigidarium, a tepidarium and a caldarium. As part of a guided tour, participants can also experience the traditional Tibórnia with rye bread from Belmonte.

Which Accommodation Suits Your Trip Plans?

When searching for a holiday apartment in Belmonte, it is worth first deciding on the focus you want for your trip. For a culture-focused trip, the castle, Jewish heritage, museums and historic buildings take centre stage. Those who would prefer to focus more on the landscape can consider the Zêzere, Serra da Esperança and the route with Roman and medieval stone paths. For families with different interests, the combination of sightseeing, landscapes, history and regional cuisine offers several ways to make the days varied without trying to fit every experience into a single programme.
