Mogadouro: Hiking Trails, Douro Views and Culture

Mogadouro combines impressive landscapes with a rich cultural history and regional traditions. Anyone looking for a mix of hiking, historical discoveries, festivals and regional products during their trip will find various options here for planning their days. The Parque Natural do Douro Internacional also shapes the surrounding area: It stretches for approximately 122 kilometres along the Douro border section and includes parts of Mogadouro.

Hiking Trails with Different Focal Points

Mogadouro has eight different marked hiking trails with varying difficulty levels and historical, scenic or cultural focuses. This allows you to choose your excursions according to the interests of your travel group without looking for the same landscape experience every day.

The PR1 Trilho de São Cristóvão leads to a viewpoint on the Serra da Figueira. From there, you can see Mogadouro, the Reboredo, Bornes and Nogueira mountain ranges, as well as the Mirandese Plateau. The PR2 Trilho do Monóptero is approximately 16 kilometres long and begins next to the Igreja Matriz de Santa Maria de Azinhoso. On the PR3 Trilho de São Fagundo, you can see the Cascata do Poço da Frágua waterfall outside the village. The Miradouro dos Picões offers another scenic perspective, with views of the Douro winding through the steep slopes and of neighbouring Spain.

Castles, Churches and Rural Culture

The Castelo de Mogadouro has been documented since the 12th century. Founded by the Templars, the castle is now a ruin; among the surviving features are a tall Dionysian keep and remains of the Alcáçova. The Igreja Matriz de Mogadouro also offers interesting details for a cultural walk: It dates from the 16th century, has three naves and a main chapel with a Gothic vault.

The Capela da Misericórdia is attached to the Igreja Matriz de Santa Maria de Azinhoso and houses a permanent exhibition of sacred art. The Monóptero de São Gonçalo stands on the site of an earlier chapel with the same dedication. At the Museu Rural de Urrós, displayed objects provide insights into grain cultivation and the processing of grain into bread. The ruins of the Capela de São Fagundo preserve the front portal and the triumphal arch of the main chapel. The Centro de Interpretação do Mundo Rural presents temporary and permanent exhibitions.

The former Guarda Fiscal barracks at the PR8 also tell the story of the border: They were once used for the continuous monitoring of smuggling and are now decommissioned. The headquarters of the Parque Natural do Douro Internacional is located in Mogadouro at Rua Dr. Francisco António Vicente, 4, 5200-271 Mogadouro.

Festivals, Traditions and Regional Products

The Terra Transmontana Festival takes place in July in the castle grounds, at Praça da Misericórdia and in Mogadouro’s historic quarter. The Feira dos Gorazes is held annually in October. The Feira das Amendoeiras em Flor also takes place every year in Mogadouro on weekends from the end of February and/or in March. A distinctive local tradition connects Fraga dos Amores with the number of future romantic relationships: According to legend, the number of stones left lying there represents that number.

The regional range of products mentioned includes Posta Mirandesa and Marrã, as well as honey, smoked products, wine, olive oil, preserves, cheese, dried fruit and mushrooms. In an initial phase, Origem: Mogadouro is intended to present local producers and regional products online and in the premises of the local trade association ACISM.
