Vinhais: Nature Trails, Culture and Regional Cuisine

The ultrabasic geology of the Bragança-Vinhais Massif is associated with characteristic flora and individual endemic species. For personal daily planning, trails with clearly different lengths are available. A Caminho da Ciradelha is a 9 km PR hiking trail focused on the landscape in the parish of Vinhais. The circular route passes the Roman archaeological site of Ciradelha and villages in the Serra da Coroa. The 4.8 km PR hiking trail Moinho do Perigo begins at the entrance to Vinhais, runs through chestnut and oak woodlands, and passes watermills on the Rio Trutas. Fragas do Pinheiro is a 12 km PR landscape trail in the parish of Pinheiro Novo.

At 3.2 km, PR9 – Trilho do Alto da Ciradelha is a shorter circular route option in Montesinho Natural Park. It is intended to connect visitors with nature through observation of the local flora and fauna. PR10 – Percurso das Termas do Tuela passes through agricultural mosaic landscapes, riverside corridors, natural meadows and stands of Pyrenean oak. It is named after a thermal spring in a small building on the left bank of the Tuela River. The route of the Via Augusta XVII is also present in the municipality of Vinhais, covering around 18 km there along the border of the parish of Agrochão.

Culture, history and special discoveries

Centro Cultural Solar dos Condes de Vinhais is housed in the former Solar dos Condes de Vinhais, dating from the 18th century. The institution includes a permanent collection of paintings by António Palolo. Museu de Arte Sacra is located in the 18th-century Convento de São Francisco and offers an interior tour to the choir of Igreja de N.ª Sr.ª da Encarnação and Igreja de São Francisco, and to Capela de N.ª Sr.ª das Dores, as well as an exterior visit to Capela da Oração de Jesus no Horto.

Lorga de Dine offers an unusual combination of nature and archaeology: it is a natural karst cave that was used by humans from the Late Neolithic and Chalcolithic periods through the beginning of the Iron Age. Núcleo Interpretativo da Lorga de Dine features information panels as well as an exhibition of replicas and original archaeological artefacts. There are also seven lime kilns at Lorga, whose production continued until the 1960s. Further insights into regional traditions are provided by Centro Interpretativo das Raças Autóctones, with life-size representations of 55 Portuguese native breeds, and Centro Interpretativo do Porco e do Fumeiro, which demonstrates and preserves knowledge and practices related to pig farming and smoked products.

Regional cuisine and seasonal events

Vinhais's local cuisine is based on authentic, natural products. Specialities include Casulas, Milhos, Cuscos and Fumeiro de Vinhais. Feira do Fumeiro takes place every year in February. In autumn 2026, the XXI Rural Castanea – Festa da Castanha is also scheduled to take place in Vinhais from 23 to 25 October. It is dedicated to the Castanha Longal chestnut variety, local products, traditions and the identity of Trás-os-Montes.
