Discover Mogadouro
Accommodation in Mogadouro
Mogadouro offers several specific ways to explore its history and culture: Castelo de Mogadouro, Igreja Matriz, Convento de S. Francisco and local craft traditions. At the municipal level, Parque Natural do Douro Internacional adds a natural area along the Douro. This lets you choose different focuses when planning your trip—from architectural history and art to nature and birdlife.
Castle and traces of history
Castelo de Mogadouro has been documented since the 12th century. At that time, Fernão Mendes, known as the Braganção, handed the castle over to the Templars. A towering keep dating from the time of King Denis and the remains of the Alcáçova have survived. The name Alcáçova refers to the fortified area of the complex; together with the keep, it makes clear that the castle comprises more than a single tower.
A specific local landmark is Miradouro do Castelo de Mogadouro on Rua do Castelo. Igreja Matriz de Mogadouro offers a different perspective on the town’s architectural history: the church dates from the 16th century and has three naves and a Gothic vault in the chancel. The main altarpiece is gilded and designed in the Pombaline style. At the rear of the church there is also a tiled panel from the 17th century. These different architectural features and furnishings bring together several historical styles.
Church art, monastery and museum collections
Convento de S. Francisco is also one of Mogadouro’s cultural-history landmarks. D. Luis Álvares de Távora founded it in the first decades of the 17th century. The castle, church and monastery thus represent different chapters in the town’s history; their dates and architectural forms each provide a distinct point of reference if you are interested in historic Mogadouro.
Museu de Mogadouro makes its collections accessible through a digital catalogue. It covers artistic, ethnological, documentary and archaeological collections. Another archaeological site is Sala Museu de Arqueologia: it opened to the public in 1989 to exhibit and promote Mogadouro’s archaeological heritage.
Embroidery and lacework are also part of local culture and are considered Mogadouro’s most widespread crafts. Alongside stone buildings and archaeological subjects, they turn the focus to textile handiwork. If you want to include both architecture and local traditions in your trip, these crafts offer another cultural focus, clearly distinct from architectural history.
Natural landscape and when to visit
Parque Natural do Douro Internacional includes parts of the municipality of Mogadouro along the Douro border section. In the park, the steep banks of the deep Douro Valley form impressive gorges. Several bird species that are threatened with extinction at national and international levels nest there; these include the Egyptian vulture, also known as Abutre do Egito or Britango. Nature and culture offer different ways to shape your trip: on one side are historic buildings and crafts, and on the other, the gorge landscape and its birdlife.
The annual Gorazes Fair takes place in Mogadouro in October. If you want to plan your stay around this event, check the dates for your chosen year before travelling. If the natural landscape is the main focus of your trip, make Parque Natural do Douro Internacional a distinct part of your plans.
