Arnóia – Castle, Hiking Trails and Historic Village Landscapes

Arnóia offers a journey between castle, historic village character and designated trails. Castelo de Arnoia stands on a mountain promontory and preserves four prominent defensive features: a keep, a square tower, a single gate and a cistern. The top floor of the keep and the battlements were reconstructed in the 20th century. Those wishing to combine culture with activity will therefore find different ways here to explore the history of the place.

Castle and historic village character

Below the castle lies the historic settlement of Villa de Basto, now known as Aldeia do Castelo. Its surviving buildings illustrate the political and judicial powers once concentrated there. The original settlement developed under the protection of the castle and, particularly from the beginning of the 16th century, became the municipality’s centre of power. In 1520, it received a foral charter from D. Manuel I.

To this day, Aldeia do Castelo has a unified, consistent appearance. A group of buildings shaped life in the village community through their characteristics, functions and presence. Igreja e Convento de Arnóia is also part of the area’s historical orientation: the elongated church is connected laterally to convent buildings. The Benedictine monastery built in Arnóia in the Middle Ages is also associated with an unresolved historical question, as the founder of its establishment is disputed.

Hiking on the PR1

The PR1 “À volta do Castelo e Villa de Basto” is a circular route approximately 17 km long. It starts and ends in Aldeia do Castelo in the parish of Arnóia and is designated as a route for hiking and mountain biking. The first loop section is also interesting for planning a day trip: it follows 4,250 metres of forest tracks from the village of Castelo to Calvelo Hill, whose summit is home to a small chapel.

The route includes a variety of terrain features. After crossing a narrow watercourse, a steep ascent leads to the Penícia viewpoint. Along the PR1, the Chapel of Santa Luzia is also one of the notable visitor attractions of Aldeia do Castelo. Access to Castelo de Arnoia leads from a partly unpaved road onto a path between rocks. If you are travelling with children or need to take different interests within your group into account, you can include these specific trail sections when choosing your day plans.

Information about the castle and route

The Centro Interpretativo do Castelo de Arnoia is housed in a restored former primary school in Aldeia do Castelo. It provides information about the national monument and also serves as an information centre for the Rota do Românico. Castelo de Arnoia is part of the Rota do Românico do Tâmega e Sousa. Various educational and cultural activities complement the interpretation centre’s offering.
