Guimarães: History, Nature and Creative Experiences

Guimarães combines an exceptionally well-preserved urban layout with culture, crafts and experiences in the surrounding landscape. The historic centre and the Couros Zone illustrate the development of specific building types from the medieval settlement to the present-day city, particularly between the 15th and 19th centuries. At the same time, Montanha da Penha, creative workshops and regional tastings offer various possibilities for shared days on holiday. City history among palaces, churches and museums

One of the prominent cultural sites is the Paço dos Duques de Bragança, an aristocratic palace dating from the 15th century. Its collections include tapestries, porcelain, paintings, furniture, sculptures and weapons, among other items. The Castelo de S. Mamede was founded in the 10th century by Countess Mumadona Dias. The Igreja de São Miguel do Castelo is a 13th-century building erected during the first three decades of that century. The Museu de Alberto Sampaio houses one of the most valuable collections of sacred artworks in Portugal. At the CIAJG, objects from different periods, places and contexts are presented alongside works by contemporary artists. Those who want to learn about the city’s history not only through individual buildings can find an exhibition at the Casa da Memória featuring images, stories, documents and objects. The Rota da Biodiversidade da Penha is an approximately 4-kilometre-long linear walking route with eleven information boards distributed along it. At the Oficina de Bordado de Guimarães, participants learn the local embroidery technique, create their own embroidered piece and take it home as a personalised souvenir of Guimarães. The embroidery craft is characterised by six colours—red, blue, beige, grey, white and black—stylised motifs and twenty-one stitches.

For a culinary activity, there is the Oficina do Sabor at the Paladário de Guimarães: the participatory cooking experience takes place with the chefs and ends with a tasting. At the wine tasting at Quinta dos Encados, regional cheeses, toast and bread are served; a tour of the quinta is also included. The Festas Nicolinas are student festivals held in honour of Saint Nicholas of Myra. Their first documented mention dates from 1664.
