Vizela: Thermal Springs, Trails and History

Vizela combines a thermal tradition, scenic heights and a surprisingly diverse cultural heritage. Between Parque das Termas, the Santuário de São Bento das Peras and historic sites, you can shape your trip in very different ways: with relaxing hours, walks, regional cuisine or excursions into history. Thermal Tradition and a Historic Garden

Caldas de Vizela has three thermal facilities and around 50 springs. Together, they form Portugal’s largest thermal spa. The thermal water contains sulphur, bicarbonate and sodium. The facilities are located along the river that gives the town its name and near Guimarães, which is associated with the origins of Portugal in the national tourism information. This gives Vizela a special appeal for travellers who want to combine exploring the landscape with a stay rooted in thermal tradition.

Parque das Termas was designated a Historic Garden in 2020. The park is also home to Campo Municipal de Minigolfe Fonseca e Castro, with an 18-hole course for mini-golf and felt golf. The course is used for national and international competitions as well as leisure and entertainment. Those travelling with different interests can plan a more active stop here alongside the thermal offerings.

Trails, Watercourses and Views

The Passadiços de Vizela form an approximately 6 km-long linear footpath. To reach the Quedas de Água de Requeixos, it is suggested that you use these walkways; they follow the bed of the Ribeira de Sá. The stated length helps with planning your day without presupposing a walking time or level of difficulty. Above the town lies the Santuário de São Bento das Peras at an altitude of approximately 410 metres. From there, panoramic views extend across Vizela and the surrounding valley. The Capela Velha in the sanctuary dates back to the 16th century. On 11 July, the festival in honour of S. Bento das Peras, also known as S. Bentinho, takes place. It includes a procession on foot from the town to the summit of the mountain of the same name.

History, Museums and Regional Specialities

A notable testament to the area’s older history is the Ponte Velha de Vizela. The medieval bridge replaced an earlier Roman bridge at the same location on the route between Bracara Augusta and Mérida. The Treaty of Tagilde was signed on 10 July 1372; it marked the beginning of the formalisation of the Portuguese–British alliance. At the Museu dos Bombeiros Voluntários de Vizela, which opened in May 2017, you can see old vehicles and pieces of equipment.

The local food culture is also part of the town’s distinctive character. Bolinhol has been part of Vizela’s gastronomic heritage for more than a century. Bolinhol de Vizela was chosen as one of the seven sweet wonders of Portugal. Feira do Bolinhol is one of the initiatives intended to keep Bolinhol alive as a symbol of Vizela. In addition, a cultural space run by a family association displays hundreds of objects of various kinds, including communal and ethnographic items as well as other pieces from family collections.
