Castro Verde between Steppe Landscape and Culture

Castro Verde combines the vast steppe landscape of the Alentejo’s Campo Branco with a remarkable cultural density. The landscape of the biosphere reserve has been shaped by centuries of human use connected with nature. Culture between Azulejos, Music and Roman Traces

One of the town’s defining buildings is the Basílica Real de Castro Verde, also known as the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Conceição. It was built in 1573 on the orders of King Sebastião in honour of the Battle of Ourique, replacing an earlier church. Inside, there are around 60,000 azulejos in the style of Lisbon’s artisans from 1730. The tiles depict the story of D. Afonso Henriques and the Miracle of Ourique.

The Viola Campaniça and Cante are part of the region’s musical identity. The Viola Campaniça is a traditional stringed instrument with five courses of strings; Castro Verde is one of the important centres of this regional musical tradition. Cante is sung chorally and without instruments and is maintained by numerous choirs in Castro Verde. The Igreja dos Remédios dates from the 17th century and preserves traces of the southern Portuguese painters Pardalinho and Diogo Magina.

Older history is also present. The Museu da Lucerna displays around 1,000 fired-clay Roman oil lamps that were recovered near Santa Bárbara de Padrões. There, a Roman settlement also includes the remains of a basilica-like religious area. The Silabário da Espanca is a stone engraved with characters of Phoenician origin from the 5th or 4th century BC.

Paths through the Campo Branco

Several different routes are available for active days out. The Rota CM1138 – Rota das Abetardas lies in the Castro Verde area, in a breeding zone for great bustards. The period between May and September is recommended for walking it. The Rota N123-2 – Rota da Batalha de Ourique connects Castro Verde, Geraldos, Cerro de São Pedro das Cabeças and the Ribeira de Cobres. On this route, it is recommended to descend Cerro de São Pedro das Cabeças on foot and walk along the Cobres River, which is called Ribeira de Cobres here.

The Rota EM535 – Rota da Aldeia Comunitária, with Aivados, Casével and the Almeirim section of the Museu da Ruralidade, as well as the Rota do Museu Vivo provide further insights into the rural surroundings. The latter runs via the IP2, begins in Ourique and ends in Castro Verde. The Museu da Ruralidade itself was created by expanding the former Casa da Leda on the northwestern edge of the village of Entradas, on the plain of Castro Verde in the Alentejo.

Those who want to go birdwatching can, after registering in advance with CEAVG, take part in guided tours on foot or in a 4x4 vehicle. There is also access to photographic observation hides on LPN properties in the Castro Verde region. Castro Verde is also a birdwatching destination and offers routes designed for cyclists.

Festivals and Regional Cuisine

The Feira de Castro takes place every year on the third Sunday in October. For more than two centuries, it financed the work on and maintenance of the church. In May, the Romaria de São Miguel is held in Castro Verde. The Entrudanças Festival is an annual, three-day, participatory festival in the municipality of Castro Verde.

The regional side of the stay also includes the snacks featured as part of the Rota das Tabernas: Cachola frita, Pica-pau, Torrezmos, olives and bread. Such culinary discoveries complement a holiday focused not only on individual sights, but also on the landscape, history and living traditions.
