The history of mining goes back a long way: mining activity in the São Domingos region is said to have begun as early as the Chalcolithic period.
During its operating period, the Mina de São Domingos formed part of the Iberian Pyrite Belt and was considered Portugal’s largest and most important copper pyrite deposit. The mining complex had 27 vertical shafts and a preserved Roman gallery. During the mine’s active operating period, 25 million tonnes of copper were extracted. Pyrite extraction ended in 1965, and the mine was closed in 1966. The complex also included a power station, described as the first in the Alentejo.
Casa do Mineiro and former mining settlement
Casa do Mineiro – Centro de Documentação is the first permanent location of the Museu da Mina de São Domingos. It reconstructs the living environment of a mining family and collects and archives photographic, documentary and material records relating to the 150-year history of the São Domingos mining complex. This makes it possible to view the industrial past not only through technical facilities, but also through the everyday lives of the people.
The former mining complex is presented as an open-air museum and illustrates life during the mining era as well as the various phases of ore extraction and processing. The former mining settlement consisted of single-storey terraced houses with whitewashed façades. Paths and squares had unpaved earth surfaces. In the parish of Corte do Pinto, the remains of two significant hill forts were also discovered, including the Castro da Corte de S. Domingos.

The PR10 MTL – Rota do Minério passes through the Mina de São Domingos and along mining infrastructure and former settlements. Other sections run past former workers’ quarters, workshops and abandoned machinery. The route also follows former smuggling paths. The Albufeira da Tapada Grande lies near Corte do Pinto. It is used as a recreational area and river beach and is located in the Parque Natural do Vale do Guadiana, close to the Mina de São Domingos. A fair is held annually in Corte do Pinto on the second Sunday in September. A market takes place in Mina de São Domingos on the fourth day of every month. A procession in honour of Nossa Senhora da Conceição is listed for 15 August.
