Discover the Algarve: Nature, Culture and Regional Experiences
The Algarve can be discovered in many different ways: among the wetlands of Ria Formosa, historic towns, long hiking trails and regional culinary traditions. When planning your trip, it is worth first organising the experiences you want. Nature, culture, active days and culinary discoveries each lead to different priorities when choosing your holiday apartment or holiday home.
Nature and trails for active holiday days
The Ria Formosa Natural Park stretches for 60 kilometres between the Ancão Peninsula and Praia da Manta Rota beach. The wetlands of Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António also form a protected area. Those who enjoy experiencing landscapes on foot will find a marked long-distance hiking trail in the Via Algarviana. It crosses the Algarve lengthwise from Alcoutim to Cabo de São Vicente, is approximately 300 kilometres long and is divided into 14 sections. Signposts and information boards make orientation easier. Each section begins and ends in a town with accommodation and dining options.
For a shorter day of hiking, the Rota Vicentina offers 24 circular routes. The trails are designed for half-day hikes and are no more than 16 kilometres long. This allows you to choose between a longer route through the region and manageable circular trails when planning your trip. Praia do Amado also offers a distinct focus: the beach hosts several national and international competitions and has several surf schools.
Historic places and special insights
In Tavira, the Igreja de Santa Maria do Castelo has held national monument status since 1910. It is connected with the history of the town and the burial places of the seven martyr knights and D. Paio Peres Correia. Another attraction is the Camera Obscura in Tavira's old water tank, also known as Tavira Tower. In Faro, the Arco da Vila leads into the old town, known as “vila adentro”. From the cathedral's bell tower, you can see across the city and the estuary.
The Roman Ruins of Milreu demonstrate continuous settlement from the 1st to the 11th century. In Silves, the historic centre preserves the medieval layout and the character of the streets of the old medina. The towers and walls of Silves Castle offer views of the area along the Arade River and its orange groves. This allows you to choose between urban history, archaeological traces and views of the landscape when selecting your destinations.
Regional cuisine and further travel ideas
Bolo de Tacho is a culinary tradition deeply rooted throughout the Município de Monchique. The speciality is prepared with regional ingredients such as cornmeal, honey, olive oil, medronho spirit and lard. The practices associated with it have been passed down orally for at least 200 years. In May 2025, the tradition was officially included in Portugal's National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Anyone who would like to discover regional flavours alongside excursions can give this topic its own place in their trip planning.
The Algarve also has around forty golf courses offering good conditions for both experienced players and beginners. Tavira Island has a long sandy beach. Depending on whether you want to combine active days, nature observation, culture or relaxation at the beach, you can choose the location of your accommodation accordingly, without having to fit all the experiences into a single day's itinerary.
Getting there and choosing a base
From Faro Airport, taxis and buses connect the airport with the railway station in Faro city centre. From there, connections are available to destinations in the Algarve. In addition, regular and other boat services run from Cais da Porta Nova in Faro to destinations in the estuary. These travel options provide important guidance when considering which part of the Algarve suits your planned trip before searching for a holiday apartment.
For further regional searches, you can also explore Alamansil. The key question is whether you would prefer to spend your days hiking, discovering historic sites, enjoying regional cuisine, playing golf, surfing or taking trips into nature.
