Gothic buildings and historical traces
In the town, St Mary’s Church is one of the most significant Gothic architectural monuments. The origins of Świdwin Castle date back to the end of the 13th century. The Stone Gate dates from the mid-14th century and was built by the von Wedel family as one of two entrance gates to Świdwin. A small section of the town fortifications also survives: 14 metres of masonry made from fieldstones and medieval bricks in the so-called Wendish bond still stand by the Rega. The gate and the surviving wall tell different stories of the medieval town—one as an entrance, the other as a remaining section of its fortifications.
You will find further historical details in the Gmina Świdwin. In Lekowo stands a half-timbered Church of Saints Peter and Paul dating from 1751. Its furnishings include a triptych of Saint Anne with the Virgin and Child, dated 1500; a Baroque chandelier from the 18th century; a Renaissance baptismal font; and patronal pews from the mid-17th century. In nearby Oparzno, the brick church dates from 1729, and its churchyard was established in the early 18th century. There is also a naturalistic-eclectic park dating from 1870. The historical sites therefore differ not only in age, but also in architecture and furnishings.
Świdwin shares a tradition with Białogard: the annual “Battle for the Cow” (“Bitwa o krowę”) takes place alternately in the two towns. When planning your trip, check which town is hosting that year’s event. Another walking route follows the main sites of the battles between the 1st Polish Army and German units from 4 to 7 March 1945. It passes through the town of Świdwin and the municipalities of Świdwin, Ostrowice and Brzeżno.
Lakes, forests and trails in the Gmina
The Gmina Świdwin lies in the Rega Valley and in the central part of the West Pomeranian Voivodeship. It is in the immediate vicinity of the Drawsko Lakeland, on the so-called Łobez Plateau. Forests cover 28 percent of its area: they line the valleys of the Rega and Mołstowa rivers and are also scattered across the moraine plateau. Lakes and ponds account for 1.7 percent of the area. This gives the landscape several facets—from river valleys and forests to bodies of water considered attractive to anglers.
Lake Oparzno, near Oparzno, is the largest lake in the Gmina. Lakes Lekowo Duże and Lekowo Małe are near Lekowo. They are considered attractive to anglers and tourists because of their abundant fish and the adjoining parkland and forests. Wetland forest and alder carr habitats occur in the wet, marshy hollows around Lakes Oparzno and Bystrzyno Wielkie, as well as the peat bogs of Rusinowo and Klępczewo. Those especially interested in these landscapes will find a different focus here than on a town visit.
The “Jezioro Czapli” nature trail runs along the shore of Lake Oparzno in the Gmina. The route is about 1.5 kilometres long and has seven information boards; one covers nesting grey herons and bitterns. The boards give the trail a natural history focus, without requiring visitors to spot wildlife. Check the trail’s current condition before visiting.
Water routes and regional orientation
Canoeists can follow water routes along the Rega, Dębica and Mołstowa rivers in Świdwin County. Another specific starting point is in Cieszeniewo, where a 147-kilometre lowland kayaking route begins. For planning journeys across the wider area, it is also useful to know that an important railway line between Szczecin and Gdańsk runs through the county. An archaeological find adds to the history of the area: near Rusinowo, a fragment of elk antler decorated with zigzag engravings and anthropomorphic depictions was discovered. It has been dated to around 12,900–12,700 years ago and is considered one of the oldest and most valuable prehistoric works of art discovered in Poland.
