Lake landscapes with different features

Lake Miedwie covers 36.8 km², making it Poland’s fifth-largest lake. In places, a shallow-water area several dozen metres wide extends from its shore. Together with steady winds, this creates favourable conditions for windsurfing. A large expanse of water and specific conditions along the shore come together here—a distinctive feature of the lake landscape in Pyrzycki County.

The lake complex near Lipiany features different kinds of landscapes. It includes the ribbon lakes Chłop, Będzin and Wądół. Their shorelines are highly indented, with numerous peninsulas and islands. Narrow passages, shallow areas and shoals alternate with relatively great depths; anglers are drawn to the clear water. Compared with the shallow-water and wind conditions described at Lake Miedwie, the varied shoreline is what chiefly shapes the impression here.

Garden visits and seasonal opening hours

The Ogrody Przelewice cover more than 30 hectares and are home to a collection of unusual trees and shrubs from different parts of the world. The Botanical Garden in Przelewice includes a Japanese garden, a collection of rhododendrons and azaleas, the Valley of Five Springs and the Rose Walk. Its variety of plants and distinct garden areas offer a different focus from the open lake landscapes.

The Botanical Garden is open daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. from 1 April to 21 September, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from 22 September to 31 October, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. from 1 November to 31 March. In winter, it is closed on Mondays. Check the opening hours before you arrive to make sure the seasonal schedule fits your plans.

Churches, megalithic tombs and early history

The parish church in Brzesko is a Marian shrine, built from granite blocks in the 13th century. Its furnishings include an altar and a pulpit from the early 17th century. The carved, polychrome-painted ceiling is particularly striking: cone-shaped corbels hang down from the centre of the vault. The construction, furnishings and ceiling showcase different aspects of sacred architecture.

In Karsko, in the municipality of Przelewice, there is a megalithic burial ground with two similar Kujavian-type tombs, called “Zelki” or “Giant Tombs”. They were created in the later phases of the Neolithic, around 3000 to 2200 BC. The region’s history thus reaches far back—from these prehistoric tombs to later fortified settlements.

A fortified settlement of the Pomeranians was established in the 9th century on a peninsula in Lake Wedyjskie, now called Wądół and Kościelne. It formed part of the defensive system of the Pyrzyczanie tribe and served as its southern outpost. A later outer settlement gave rise to the town of Lipiany. This sequence adds the region’s early settlement and defensive history to its prehistoric heritage.
