Ogonki lies on Lake Święcajty, an arm of Lake Mamry. Water shapes the village in different ways: an unguarded beach, a pier for sailboats and a sailing marina are all part of the scene, as is a waterway that ends here. There are also cycling routes and a bunker from the Second World War. When choosing where to stay, you can therefore consider whether you would like to focus mainly on the lake, a cycling tour or the history of the passage between the lakes.
Lake Święcajty and the beach
Lake Święcajty covers 874 hectares and is up to 28 metres deep. Its shoreline is highly indented, and there are also two islands in the lake. These specific features give the lake a character of its own, rather than making it seem merely part of the connection to Lake Mamry. If water is the main focus of your stay, it is therefore worth considering Ogonki from this landscape perspective too.
Kąpielisko Ogonki is an unguarded beach on Lake Święcajty. There is a wooden pier where sailboats can moor. This describes a beach and a mooring point for sailboats, not a supervised service. If you are taking different interests within your travel group into account, you can plan these places as separate highlights: spending time at the beach and sailing each have a specific connection to the lake, but remain distinct activities.
The location on National Road 63 is also useful to know: Kąpielisko lies directly beside the road and is separated from it by barriers. On the opposite side of the road there are ice-cream stands, cafés and restaurants, as well as mountain bike rentals and a car park. This layout is helpful if you would like to get a picture in advance of what is at the beach itself and what can be found across the road.
Cycling routes and landscape
One option for a cycling tour is the circular cycling route around Lake Stręgiel. On the section from Pozezdrze to Ogonki, it shares the route with the blue “Błękitna wstęga jezior” cycling trail. The way to Ogonki follows a route laid out on a former railway line and passes through marshy areas. This section thus combines the former use of the route with a present-day trail through a landscape different from the lakeshore.
Another cycling route description concerns the Green Velo cycling trail: a comfortable cycling path branches off from the promenade towards Ogonki and follows the former railway line. This provides another starting point for planning a route; it should not be confused with the section of the circular cycling route around Lake Stręgiel mentioned above. If you would like to combine cycling with a stay by the water during your trip, these different routes may play a role in choosing where to stay.
Waterway and history
In Ogonki, the Mamry–Sapina waterway ends where the Sapina River flows into Lake Święcajty. The waterway across Lake Mamry and Lake Święcajty is classified as a Class II waterway. Ogonki can therefore also be considered the endpoint of this waterway connection. There is also a sailing marina in the village; before the war, Ogonki and Lake Święcajty were known for ice sailing. This historical distinction belongs to a different era from today’s route and village descriptions.
A bunker from the Second World War stands by the bridge in Ogonki. It served as a fortification at the strategic passage between the lakes. The bunker highlights another aspect of the village: the passage is not only a geographical crossing but was also significant for military defence. Together with the lake, sailing marina and cycling routes, it offers a broad range of things to explore, without implying that there is a single prescribed way to spend your stay.
Choosing Ogonki as a holiday destination
Whether a holiday apartment in Ogonki is right for your trip depends on which of these aspects interests you most: Lake Święcajty and its beach, the cycling routes, or the waterway and the bunker by the bridge. For families with different interests, this makes it possible to choose a focus when selecting a location, without having to combine all the activities into one outing.
