The City of Three Towers
Biała Piska is known as the “City of Three Towers”; visitors are especially encouraged to see them. The water tower is a technical heritage monument dating from 1928 and stands 34 metres high. It serves as a tourist attraction, and changing exhibitions can be viewed inside. The tower offers sweeping views across the city panorama. This site thus brings together technical architectural history, exhibitions and views of the city.
The town hall is also defined by a tower: its octagonal corner tower is 30 metres high. The building dates from 1772 to 1777. It is located at Plac Mickiewicza 25. Together with the water tower, it offers a chance to appreciate the differences between the buildings without confusing the dates when they were built.
Church and Memorial Sites
The Church of St Andrew Bobola was built between 1756 and 1763. The Baroque church has a main altar dating from the 17th century; its bell tower was added in 1932. The tower’s design is attributed to K. F. Schlink. The different dates point to several stages in the building’s history: the altar, the construction of the church and the tower added later.
A plaque in front of the Baroque church commemorates miners from the Wujek mine who died at the beginning of martial law. Another memorial site is the war cemetery on Konopnicka Street. It contains the graves of Russian soldiers from the First World War and Soviet soldiers from 1945. One of the monuments depicts a hammer and sickle and bears an inscription about the Soviet soldiers who fell there in 1945. A second monument bears an Orthodox cross and is dedicated to Russian soldiers who fell in the First World War. The different symbols and dedications show the cemetery’s distinct commemorative associations.
Urban Layout and Further Traces
The protected urban layout includes an area with clearly defined boundaries: to the southeast, the Biała River and a pond mark the boundary; to the northwest, the street frontage of Żeromskiego Street; to the north, Warszawska Street; and to the south, Ogrodowa Street. The city park dates from the 19th century. Those interested in the town’s historic character will find not only individual buildings but also a protected part of the urban layout and a park from that period.
The city was known for its large livestock markets, which were linked to its location on a trade route. The railway station building also tells of a later era: it dates from around the turn of the 20th century. The complex includes the site on Kolejowa Street. These historical connections add trade and railway architecture to the picture of Biała Piska.
Beyond the City
The wider municipal area has year-round opportunities for cycling, hiking and horse-riding routes. The historic Ułański Trail passes bunkers from the Second World War. These activities are available in the wider municipal area and complement the city’s buildings and memorial sites with routes and historical traces beyond the city limits.
The Powiatowe Dożynki were held in Biała Piska in 2025. The programme at the time included a thanksgiving service for the harvest, the blessing of harvest crowns, a harvest procession and performances by folk groups from Lithuania, Rozogi and Ełk. As described, the festival combines religious and agricultural traditions with folk performances; it is an example of the city’s cultural life in that year.
