Miłomłyn: Canal Routes, Kurpark and Building History

At Lake Ilińskie on the former railway embankment

The terrain therapy route in Miłomłyn follows a former railway embankment along Lake Ilińskie. Its amenities include solar lights, benches and small jetties. The benches offer places to take a break, while the railway embankment gives the route its distinctive course.

The route can be reached via Jeziorna Street. From there, turn right towards the car park by the lake and the bridge. This makes it easier to plan your visit to the route without confusing it with the region’s more extensive waterways.

Branches and a lock on the Elbląg Canal

The Elbląg Canal is a tourist waterway that branches in Miłomłyn: east towards Ostróda and Stare Jabłonki, west towards Zalewo and Iława, and north towards Elbląg. These directions give the town a special significance for anyone interested in the course of the canal.

One specific feature of this waterway landscape is the Miłomłyn Lock on Kościelna Street. It connects the branch towards Ostróda with the higher water level of the canal towards Elbląg and Iława. The marina includes a slipway and a landing stage; a lowered landing stage is intended for light watercraft. If you plan to use the marina facilities, check their current availability in advance.

Further afield in the region, excursion boats operate on part of the Elbląg Canal. Kayaks and sailboats can travel along its entire length. This makes the perspective on the canal in Miłomłyn—with its branches and lock—different from the activities associated with the waterway on a larger scale.

Forest Kurpark and seasonal graduation tower

Miłomłyn’s forest Kurpark, covering just under 63 hectares, offers outdoor recreation and movement therapy. Inhalation shelters and two therapy stations with outdoor fitness equipment make the facilities available on site. When planning your visit, you can choose between a quieter stay outdoors and exercise at the therapy stations.

The salt graduation tower is another health-related reason to visit. It has an area for inhalation baths and a separate area for resting and relaxation. The graduation tower operates from May to October; check its seasonal opening period before your visit.

Neo-Gothic architecture and older features at St. Bartholomew’s Church

The three-aisled Church of St. Bartholomew was built in the Neo-Gothic style in 1898–1901. A low clock tower stands at its northeastern corner. Its building history also includes an older section: the Gothic nave was demolished during construction, but its north wall and the medieval defensive tower were preserved. The defensive tower continued to serve as a bell tower.

The church can therefore be viewed both for its Neo-Gothic appearance and for its preserved older features. If you would like to include architectural history alongside landscapes and waterways on your trip, it offers a distinct cultural focus in Miłomłyn.

A nature trail in the neighbouring municipality

For a nature outing nearby, consider the Sosny Taborskiej Nature Reserve in the neighbouring municipality of Łukta. The trail there is intended for pedestrians and cyclists, as well as adults and children. More than ten wooden information boards line the route.

The nature reserve was established in 1957 to protect the local ecotype of Scots pine and natural succession processes in a deciduous forest habitat. This conservation focus gives the trail a different theme from the paths by the lake in Miłomłyn: here, the focus is on Scots pine and the development of the habitat.

Those wishing to include a nature trail can consider the neighbouring municipality of Łukta as a separate excursion destination.
