River landscape and the Camino de Santiago

The eastern part of Nowe Miasto Lubawskie lies within the Obszar Chronionego Krajobrazu Doliny Dolnej Drwęcy Landscape Protection Area. The Camino de Santiago also passes through the town. Its route runs through the Drwęca Valley and forests, as well as along the shores of the lakes of Warmia and Masuria. Nowe Miasto Lubawskie is therefore part of a route that links diverse landscapes. If you are interested in the Camino de Santiago, you can take the town’s connection to this route into account when planning your trip; if you want to focus on the local landscape, the protected area to the east offers a distinctive feature.

Medieval town and historic buildings

Fragments of the town walls have survived. The Gothic Brodnicka and Lubawska gate towers are examples of medieval defensive architecture. Construction of the town walls began in the 1330s. Despite later alterations, original loopholes and distinctive bay windows have been preserved on the Lubawska Gate Tower. Together, the remains of the walls and the details of the gate tower offer different insights into the history of the fortifications. The urban complex of Nowe Miasto Lubawskie was entered in the register of monuments in 1957.

The parish church, also known as the Basilica of St Thomas the Apostle, offers another historical focus. Construction began around 1300; its furnishings and building history include a late Renaissance choir and an organ from the early 17th century. Since 1959, the Muzeum Ziemi Lubawskiej has been housed in the Baszta Brodnicka. Its collections illustrate the history and everyday life of the region’s inhabitants over several centuries. Features preserved in the parish cemetery include historic gravestones, a Neoclassical mortuary chapel with adjoining burial chapels, and a cemetery gate. The historic market square retains the unique character of times gone by.

Cycling and hiking

There are several different route options for active days. A 12.8 km cycling route runs between Kurzętnik and Nowe Miasto Lubawskie through the Drwęca Valley, which is protected as part of the Natura 2000 network. A family cycling route starts at the market square, by the tourist information centre. The 13 km TO-2215 hiking trail connects Nowe Miasto Lubawskie with the yellow hiking trail in the Drwęca Valley. This offers a choice of different starting points and connections: a cycling route between two places, a route that starts at the market square, and a hiking trail that links up with another trail. You can plan your day according to whether you would prefer to focus on a cycling route or a hiking connection.

Further afield, a 37.3 km canoe route runs along the Drwęca. It is organised and inspected regularly and is suitable for nature and active holidays. This adds a water-based activity to the cycling and hiking routes without combining them into a single route.

Getting your bearings

The tourist information centre is located at Rynek 23; the family cycling route also starts at the market square. For cultural events and concerts, the Kinoteatr Harmonia can accommodate up to 300 people and has 197 seats.
