Szkotowo: Lakeside, Cycling Routes and Local History

Szkotowo lies on Lake Szkotowskie; cycling routes start in the village or pass through it. The village is also home to a parish church with a history dating back to the 19th century and the story of a former mill. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can decide whether the lake, cycling trips or local history should be the main focus of your visit.

Shoreline and landscape

Lake Szkotowskie covers 41.3 hectares and is up to 6.2 metres deep. Its shores differ considerably: the northern and eastern shores are high and steep, while the western shore is low and marshy. The result is not a uniform shoreline, but a clear contrast between the different sides. Almost all of Szkotowo lies within the Nida and Szkotówka River Valleys Landscape Protection Area and the Lake Mielno Landscape Protection Area.

The waterways are also connected: a small stream from Lake Kownatki flows into Lake Szkotowskie from the north. The Szkotówka flows out of its southern part. This links two lakes and a river through the waterways described here.

Cycling routes with different profiles

The blue cycling route starts in Szkotowo. It passes through Kownatki, Turowo and Turówko to Januszkowo, then returns to Szkotowo; its total length is 20.6 kilometres. The route runs partly on unpaved roads and partly on paved roads.

The yellow loop is longer, at 35.1 kilometres. From Szkotowo, it passes through Rączki, Szerokopaś, Łysakowo, Sławka Mała, Kozłowo, Sławka Wlk. and Rogóż before returning to the starting point. The route alternates between dirt tracks, surfaced roads and asphalt roads. Its length and road surfaces provide concrete points of comparison between the two cycling loops.

Another option is the “Szlak kurhanów” cycling route, which passes through Szkotowo. Within the municipality of Kozłowo, it is about 30 kilometres long and is considered moderately difficult. Check the route conditions locally before setting off; on the yellow cycling route, you should also look out for current trail markings.

Church, mill and local history

The parish church of St Joseph the Worker in Szkotowo was built between 1874 and 1877 as an Evangelical church. The parish in Szkotowo is dedicated to St Joseph. The former manor house is also significant to the history of the village: its estate included more than 1,000 hectares of land and a mill.

The earliest documented reference to a mill in Szkotowo dates from the 15th century. Towards the end of the first half of the 19th century, the mill was abandoned and demolished. The history of the village is also connected with the Kostka family: from the 15th to the 18th century, Szkotowo belonged at different times to, among others, Mikołaj, Jan, Stanisław and Feliks Kostka.

Another historic site is the larger First World War cemetery on the western edge of Szkotowo, beside the dirt track to Siemianowo. The church, former mill, family history and cemetery mark different periods in the history of the village.
