Święta Lipka combines an important baroque pilgrimage sanctuary with a tradition of pilgrimage, a museum and music. The complex includes the Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the cloisters surrounding it and the monastery. It is designated a Pomnik Historii (Historic Monument) and is considered the oldest centre of Marian worship in northern Poland. Church, Cloisters and Chapels
The sanctuary is an exceptionally fine-quality baroque sacred complex. By decree dated 24 February 1983, Pope John Paul II granted the church the title of Basilica minor. For visitors with a particular interest in religious art and sacred architecture, the cloisters and monastery, as well as the church, shape the character of the complex.
The pilgrimage route from Reszel to Święta Lipka includes a complex of 15 Rosary chapels. Their niches contain reliefs depicting the Mysteries of the Rosary. The chapels are built of brick and plastered; most have gabled roofs, while three have hipped roofs. When looking at the chapel complex, visitors can thus observe not only its religious significance but also a range of specific architectural differences.
The final section of the pilgrimage route to Święta Lipka follows an unpaved path through the forest. The “Gwiaździsta” (Star) pilgrimage leads to Święta Lipka from Reszel, Kętrzyn, Mrągowo, Giżycko and nearby parishes. Those interested in the pilgrimage tradition can take these different connections to the place of pilgrimage into account when planning their trip.
Organ and Museum
The baroque organ offers another way to experience the sanctuary: visitors can hear it played and watch its moving elements every day. The sanctuary publishes fixed times for organ performances. On Sundays and public holidays, performances are listed for 10:00, 12:30, 13:30, 15:00 and 16:00; on Saturdays, for 10:00, 11:00, 13:00, 14:00 and 15:30. On weekdays, the times are 10:00, 11:00, 14:00, 15:30 and 17:00. Different times sometimes apply to groups of more than 20 people, in some cases by prior arrangement.
The Świętolipskie Museum is open daily from 10:00 to 17:00 from May to September. Its seven exhibition rooms house six permanent exhibitions as well as temporary exhibitions. One exhibition is devoted to the history of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Święta Lipka. The museum also displays part of the personal library of Saint John Paul II: around 1,000 books and albums that were brought from Rome to Święta Lipka after his death. A visit to the museum thus complements impressions of the sacred complex with historical themes and personal book collections.
Music in the Basilica
The Świętolipskie Music Evenings are another cultural event to consider when planning a trip. The organisers describe them as an annual music event and announced preparations for the 39th edition in 2027. The evenings have been held in the basilica on Fridays at 20:00 during the summer holidays since 1989. Together with the organ performances, they offer different musical experiences: the performances are part of the daily visitor experience, while the Music Evenings are an event held on a set day of the week and at a set time.
