Wężówka combines its location in the Masurian Lake District with local history dating back to the 15th century. This makes the village interesting for travellers who want to take the historical background of their destination into account when looking for a holiday apartment. Its history includes an estate on the Wężówka stream, a later landed estate nearby, as well as brick houses and a Protestant cemetery in the village.

Location in the Masurian Lake District

The village lies in the northeastern part of the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, in the Kraina Wielkich Jezior Mazurskich, the region of the Great Masurian Lakes. Wężówka is 26 km southeast of Giżycko and 3.5 km southeast of Wydminy; it is also close to the border of Ełk County. The distances indicate different scales: Wydminy is the nearer of the two reference points mentioned, while Giżycko is considerably farther away. Together with the location near the county border, they help you place Wężówka in the region and compare it with other destinations as you plan your trip.

An estate and a later landed estate

An early historical reference dates back to 1475. That year, the Komtur of Pokarmin, Bernard von Balzhofen, granted Andrzej and Maciek five włóki of land on the Wężówka stream as an estate. This links the stream to a specific land grant and the people named. In the 17th century, the Gawliki Małe landed estate was established nearby: it originated with the Gębałek grange and the holdings of Maciej Szymon and Adam Drygalski, which together covered 27.5 włóki. The estate grew later in the same century and had a mill as well as the right to sell drinks. The mill and the right to sell drinks are two specific features of the estate’s later development; they distinguish it from the earlier land grant on the stream. Thus, an estate in the 15th century and the development of a landed estate in the 17th century represent distinct historical periods.

Historical landmarks in the village

The village has brick houses numbered 5 and 6, dating from the early 20th century, as well as a Protestant cemetery from the 19th century. The history of buildings and remembrance thus adds two more periods to the earlier historical references. The houses and cemetery are in Wężówka, while the Gawliki Małe landed estate is nearby. This distinction in location is as important as the distinction in time: it separates local architectural history from the development of the estate in the surrounding area, without disconnecting either from the regional context.

Choosing a place to stay and getting there

This combination of local history and regional location can be a useful factor when choosing a holiday apartment. If you enjoy learning about how a place developed, Wężówka offers specific points of reference from the 15th-century estate to houses from the early 20th century; the history of Gawliki Małe adds context about the nearby area. There is also a specific timetable note for getting there: a timetable for Route 31, valid from 1 December 2025, lists a stop in Wężówka with departure times. If you are considering travelling by bus, check the current information for Route 31 before your journey.
