Archaeological traces and architectural history
A settlement and a cremation cemetery of the Bogaczew culture in Paprotki date from the beginning of the Common Era. The Paprotki archaeological settlement includes sites 6, 39, 40, 42 and 43; they are listed in the heritage register and monument list. For travellers interested in early history, this cultural layer is a distinct focus, dating from long before the cemeteries of the 20th century.
Another period is represented by the year 1734, when the school in Paprotki was founded. The school building is described as Masurian architecture. Its founding year and architectural classification show different aspects of local history. Remains of a watermill have also been preserved in Paprotki. Together, the school, mill and archaeological sites complement the lakeside themes with the history of education, architecture and settlement.
Cemeteries and places of remembrance
In the centre of Paprotki is a small cemetery from the First World War. German soldiers who fell in 1914 and 1915 during fighting in the region of the Great Masurian Lakes are buried there. Individual and mass graves with inscriptions that have been preserved form part of this memorial site.
Another cemetery lies on a hill near Paprotki. It has a rectangular, terraced layout. The site includes two mass graves containing 183 unidentified Russian soldiers, as well as 25 individual German graves with inscriptions. It is located about 300 metres from the Paprotki–Górkło gravel road. There are also three First World War cemeteries from 1914 and 1915 in the surrounding area; the largest was established about 2.5 kilometres south of the village. This makes it possible to explore the history not only in the centre, but also at places in the nearby surroundings.
Cycling route and travel interests
A 140-kilometre cycling route passes through Paprotki. Its route includes, among other places, Giżycko, Miłki, Górkło and Ryn. This adds a broader perspective to the local themes: Paprotki lies on a route connecting several places.
