A circular trail with nature and local history
The nature and education trail is a two-part circular route about 7 km long. It starts and ends in the centre of Kruklanki. The trail is a practical starting point if you are considering Kruklanki as a holiday destination and would like to plan a walk.
At twelve themed stops, information boards provide details about the area's fauna, flora, history and culture. The trail is not limited to a single subject: nature features alongside historical and cultural topics. One of its stops is a viewpoint overlooking Lake Patelnia. This way, the route combines information about the area with a specific destination by the lake.
The Way of St. James and the kayaking route
The Way of St. James also offers a point of reference for travellers interested in pilgrimage routes. The Olecko–Kruklanki–Giżycko section is part of a Way of St. James. It runs between Lakes Gołdopiwo and Brożówka and reaches Kruklanki after 1.5 km. From Kruklanki, it continues via Kożuchy Wielkie to Giżycko. The local circular trail and the Way of St. James represent different ways to travel: one is a circular route with stops, the other a named route connecting several places.
On the water, the Sapina is another point of interest. In the Kruklanki area, it forms part of a scenic kayaking route about 26 km long. The route connects Lake Kruklin in the south with Lake Święcajty in the north. Alongside a walk on land, a longer water route is therefore another element to consider when planning your trip.
Buildings and history
Near Kruklanki are the ruins of a five-span reinforced-concrete railway bridge over the Sapina. The bridge was built in 1908 and is located a few hundred metres south of Lake Patelnia. It is considered the best-known place in the area around Kruklanki. If you would like to explore historic buildings as well as trails and waterways, this offers a distinct point of interest.
The town's Church of the Assumption of Mary was built in 1574 and is now a parish church. Buildings from the former railway station have also been preserved. The church, bridge ruins and former station buildings offer different historical perspectives: ecclesiastical architecture, a railway bridge over the Sapina and surviving buildings from a former station.
