Rękusy lies in the southern part of the Ełk Lakeland, which forms the central part of the Masurian Lake District. This places the village within a broader landscape while also allowing visitors to explore specific traces of its history: a settlement charter from 1494 and a former school building dating from 1926. A hiking trail that passes through Rękusy also connects the village with its surroundings. Lakes at varying distances provide further points of reference for your stay.

Traces of the Village’s History

One significant historical date is 1494, when Rękusy received a settlement charter under Magdeburg law. At the time, Commander Rudolf von Tippelskirchen granted Marcin Rękus (Matz Ranckus) 7.5 łan of land. The account connects the charter with a specific land grant and names both the commander and the recipient. This makes the early history of the village tangible through a particular event and the people involved.

The former school building, dating from 1926, represents another chapter. The brick building has been renovated and altered several times. Its construction date and subsequent changes offer two different insights into its history: the year dates the building, while the renovations and alterations record later interventions. There are 432 years between the settlement charter of 1494 and the school building of 1926—two distinct chronological reference points in the history of Rękusy.

Lakes in the Surrounding Area

The locations of the lakes also provide useful points of reference around Rękusy. Lake Mołdzie is 2.5 km away. Lepaki (Lepaki Małe) is 3 km away, Guzki 3.5 km, Sunowo (Sanowo) and Szarek 3.8 km each, and Chrzanowo 4.2 km away. Each distance is measured from Rękusy and indicates the lakes’ locations; these are not distances along specific routes. This makes it possible to distinguish the nearby waters by their distance from the village without conflating them with the landscape within Rękusy.

A Hiking Trail Through Rękusy

The “Zabytkowe cmentarze” hiking trail runs from Stare Juchy via Liski, Grabnik, Rogale, Guzki, Mołdzie, Ruska Wieś, Góra Pilchowa, Rękusy and Bartosze to Ełk. Rękusy comes after Góra Pilchowa and before Bartosze on this route. The trail therefore provides a framework for viewing the village in connection with other places in the region; it is described as a hiking trail, without implying anything about its current condition.

The stops offer a glimpse into different historical contexts. At Góra Pilchowa, graves of German and Russian soldiers who died during the hostilities of 1914 to 1918 lie hidden among the trees. In Bartosze there is a cemetery dating from the Second World War, containing the remains of more than 24,000 soldiers and civilians. It is the largest cemetery of its kind in Warmia and Masuria. The time separating the two memorial sites and the different scale of the cemetery in Bartosze highlight the contrast between the region’s historical connections.

A Glimpse into Birdwatching

An account dated 7 October 2024 describes a one-off ornithological outing on 6 October as part of the European Birdwatching Days. The Centrum Edukacji Ekologicznej and the Klub Miłośników Ptaków organised the outing on the route Ełk – Rękusy – Ruska Wieś – Rogale – Lake Sawinda – Lake Sunowo – Ełk. It lasted 3.5 hours and was attended by twelve people. As a historical insight, this individual outing complements the orientation provided by the hiking trail and the village’s history.
