Forest trails and notable destinations in Bażantarnia
Bażantarnia is a 369-hectare forest park in Elbląg, on the edge of the Elbląg Upland. Marked trails invite you to hike; the park is also suitable for horse riding and cycling. In winter, its forest trails are suitable for cross-country skiing. The options therefore vary with the season: winter brings an additional activity, while hiking, horse riding and cycling offer other ways to experience the forest park.
One specific hiking destination is Diabelski Kamień in the bed of the Srebrny Potok stream. A hike leads along the valley to the stone, which local legend says the devil dropped there. In this way, the landscape is connected with a story that gives the destination its distinctive name and character. Another route option is the blue St. Adalbert Trail from Elbląg Zdrój railway station to the place where St. Adalbert died, in Święty Gaj. The trail is 42 kilometres long, offering a much longer route than a visit to a single destination in Bażantarnia.
The Elbląg Canal and waterways in the travel area
A trip on the Elbląg Canal can begin in Elbląg’s Old Town. Check the current timetable for trips and dates. The canal is a scenic and technically interesting waterway, 129.8 kilometres long; the Ostróda–Elbląg section measures 80.4 kilometres. The Buczyniec, Kąty, Oleśnica, Jelenie and Całuny inclined planes are among the tourist attractions in the wider Powiat Elbląski travel area. Ships travel two kilometres over dry land using them. This is a distinctive technical experience in the wider travel area, complementing the city and forest themes.
This is separate from the waterway on the Elbląg River and the Vistula Lagoon, which also passes through the wider travel area. If you are interested in waterways, you can distinguish between two different options: the Elbląg Canal with its inclined planes, and the waterway along the river and lagoon.
Cultural and landscape heritage in Powiat Elbląski
The Mennonite settlement heritage is also one of the defining themes of Powiat Elbląski. Its traces include arcaded houses, Dutch-style farmsteads, churches and other religious buildings, as well as former Mennonite cemeteries. Mennonites belong to an Anabaptist religious movement and came from the Netherlands to the Żuławy region in the early 16th century. This history broadens the focus beyond individual buildings, connecting architectural styles and religious buildings with the history of a religious community in the region.
