Stara Słupia: Trails, Landscape and History

Some of Stara Słupia’s defining features are its historic memorials and paths through a varied landscape. A manor house with a private park, a wooden chapel and several crosses tell different aspects of the village’s history; hiking trails lead to expansive views and into the deep valley of the Słupianka. You can shape your stay around culture, landscape or a combination of both.

Manor Park with a Viewing Mound

The manor house is privately owned. Access to the park requires the owner’s permission. Obtain it before visiting, as access conditions may change. A 1.5-hectare park adjoins the manor house to the west; rows of lime trees mark its boundary. The park also contains a viewing mound. Since it is within the park grounds, the same access condition applies to visiting it.

Chapel and Historic Memorials

Stara Słupia has a wooden chapel with a sheet-metal roof. Inside are pictures and a statue of the Virgin Mary. Both its construction and roof, as well as its religious furnishings, shape this place of worship.

A large brick cross commemorates the Church of the Martyrs Vincent and Anastasius, which burned down in 1797. According to the inscription, Walenty and Marianna Karbowniczkowie had the cross erected on 3 May 1841. The two dates mark different events: the church fire and the later erection of the memorial. A chestnut tree with a trunk circumference of more than four metres grows beside the memorial cross. A statue of the Immaculate Virgin Mary on a sandstone column also stands beside the large cross.

Another stone cross stands by the roadside along a route through Stara Słupia. It dates from 1923 and should not be confused with the large brick memorial cross.

Hiking between Ridges and River Valley

The 19-kilometre Trasa 2 circular route starts in Nowa Słupia, passes through Stara Słupia and other villages, and returns to Nowa Słupia. The blue Tarłów–Święty Krzyż long-distance trail also passes through Stara Słupia. The routes differ in their layout: Trasa 2 is a circular route with a specified length, while the long-distance trail runs through the village as part of the Tarłów–Święty Krzyż route.

A path leads through the hamlet of Winnica in Stara Słupia and onto a ridge. From there, expansive views stretch across the eastern part of the Łysogóry range, including Łysa Góra and Chełmiec, and the western part of the Jeleniowskie range, including Góra Jeleniowska and Szczytniak. The focus here is on distant views across two mountain ranges.

Another route crosses the scenic valley of the Słupianka. The river has cut deeply into the loess soil, and ongoing bank erosion is clearly visible. The ridge and valley therefore offer contrasting landscapes: wide views of named mountains and visible changes to the riverbanks.
