Mrzygłód is a former small town in the San Valley, on the edge of the Góry Czarne. Churches, the market square and former craft traditions give the town a multifaceted history; at the same time, the blue-marked Szlak Ikon hiking trail passes through Mrzygłód. This offers two distinct ways to shape your trip: explore the town’s history and buildings, or spend an active day hiking.

Churches and the market tell the story of the town
The parish church of Rozesłania Apostołów was built in the 15th century, probably in 1424. It was destroyed by the Tatars in 1624. The time between the early construction phase and this destruction makes the town’s long history visible through a specific example. The brick church of Zaśnięcia Bogurodzicy tells a different story: it was built in 1901 and is now a ruin. The two churches represent different periods in the town’s history. Nearly five centuries separate the parish church’s presumed construction in 1424 from the building of the brick church in 1901.
The market square has a historic architectural ensemble. The houses along the market frontage were built after the fire of 1893. The blacksmith’s forge, house no. 12, also stands on the market square: it was built using log construction towards the end of the 19th century and is connected to an outbuilding. Log construction is a method of building with horizontal timbers stacked on top of one another; this makes it possible to distinguish the forge’s construction from that of the brick church of Zaśnięcia Bogurodzicy. A historic turning point and a specific building method thus stand side by side in the market square.
Crafts and activities in Mrzygłód
Ceramics are another part of the town’s history. Mrzygłód was known for producing ceramics in the 17th century; the pottery tradition continued until the middle of the 20th century and then disappeared. The watermill in the hamlet of Juhnie also points to work from an earlier era. Built around 1900 using log construction, it was connected to an outbuilding and remained in operation until 1950. While the forge was built towards the end of the 19th century, the mill was built around 1900 and operated until 1950. Both share the same construction method and connection to an outbuilding; their locations—the market square and the hamlet of Juhnie—set them apart.
For an active day out, the blue-marked Szlak Ikon hiking trail passes through Mrzygłód. A Nordic walking event on the Hłomcza–Mrzygłód route offers another historic link between activity and the town: its finish was on the market square, where participants could rest and have a meal.
