Brick Castle and Cathedral
The castle of the Pomesanian canons was built of brick between 1320 and 1340. One of its distinctive features is the historic Gdanisko, a sanitary tower dating from 1393. This brings two different construction periods into focus: the period when the castle was built and the later date of this striking structure. The castle is also home to the Castle Museum. The Kwidzyn Cathedral and Castle Complex has been recognised as a Historic Monument, “Pomnik Historii”.
The cathedral is also a significant example of brick architecture: it was built between 1310 and 1360 as a Gothic brick pseudo-basilica. Inside is a medieval mosaic, probably created by artists from Venice. This cautious attribution is one of the artwork’s distinctive details. Visitors primarily interested in architectural history and art will find several points of interest: the Gothic design, the mosaic and the wider cathedral and castle complex.
Guided tours of the cathedral take place daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. If you plan to take a tour, you can take this time window into account when planning your day. The red Copernicus Trail passes through Kwidzyn on the Gardeja–Kwidzyn–Ryjewo–Biała Góra section. The green Napoleonic Trail starts at Kwidzyn railway station.
