Ostrowite: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Ostrowite is located in the Żuławy Gdańskie delta region and within the Żuławy Gdańskie Landscape Protection Area. The village combines a dispersed settlement structure with an agriculturally shaped landscape that includes historic irrigation canals.

History

Ostrowite was first mentioned in historical records in 1215. Historical records list the name forms Hostricza, Wostricza, Ostritcza and Ostriza for the village. Ostrowite is laid out partly as a linear village and partly as a row village; the settlement lies on both sides of a road running from north to south and was mentioned in 1292.

The history of the name also points to changes in the landscape: The name Ostrowite was associated with a lake that was drained in the 12th century during the drainage of the Żuławy and no longer exists today. In 1945, Ostrowite and Suchy Dąb were merged into an administrative municipality called Suchy Dąb. After 1945, the name Ostrowite was given to a new settlement located west of Suchy Dąb.

Landscape

The fields near Ostrowite feature strip fields running from east to west. Thus, alongside the dispersed settlement structure, clearly recognizable historic forms of land use are also part of the villagescape.

Villagescape and Culture

On the road from Ostrowite towards Grabiny-Zameczek stands a well-preserved, characteristic Dutch-style farmstead that is worthy of protection. In Ostrowite, a wayside chapel stands out as the only named religious cultural object.

Transport and Routes

In the immediate vicinity of Ostrowite run National Road No. 1 from Gdańsk to Cieszyn and the Czech border, which forms part of the international E75 route, as well as the A1 motorway running parallel to it. A few kilometers from Ostrowite, the international E-65 railway corridor between Gdynia and Warsaw runs through the area; rail services are provided by the station in nearby Pszczółki and the nearby railway junction station in Tczew.

On the Way

At the VIII Family Bicycle Rally (“VIII Rodzinny Rajd Rowerowy”), participants reached Ostrowite after traveling from Suchy Dąb via Skowarcz. Ostrowite is also marked, together with the Motława, on an official map of kayaking routes in the area of the Martwa Wisła and Śmiała Wisła near Gdańsk.
