Gorzów Śląski: Churches, the Prosna and Active Leisure
Accommodation in Gorzów Śląski
Gorzów Śląski brings together historic buildings, the Prosna on the edge of town and a variety of opportunities to stay active. A tall church tower rises above the town; there is also a Baroque manor house, an exhibition on railway history and sports facilities offering a range of activities. When choosing your destination, you can therefore weigh up whether you are particularly interested in architecture, riverside scenery or active leisure.
Churches and Historic Buildings
The Roman Catholic Church of the Holy Trinity (Kościół pw. Trójcy Świętej) is Neo-Gothic and built on a cruciform plan. Its tall tower defines the skyline and rises above Gorzów Śląski. The bell tower houses the bell of St John the Baptist, dating from 1711. The architecture and the bell offer two different points of interest if you would like to explore the town’s churches and history.
The Evangelical Church of the Cross of Jesus (Krzyża Jezusowego) is also Neo-Gothic. It dates from the beginning of the second half of the 19th century. The manor house at 1 Złota Street provides a different architectural accent: built between 1725 and 1775, it is Baroque and made of brick. The building is included in both the register of monuments and the list of historic monuments. The buildings around the market square are protected as historic monuments or are of historic value. Anyone interested in architectural history will find several different points of interest here, including church architecture, a manor house and the historic market square.
At the “Kredens” gallery, an exhibition for the project “Jedzie pociąg z daleka…” features a large-scale replica of the Paulinka locomotive. Photographs explore the history of railway line 196, which was established exactly 125 years ago. The exhibition’s theme complements the buildings with a look at railway history.
The Prosna and Leisure in Town
The Prosna runs along the edge of Gorzów Śląski and has always formed a natural boundary. In the municipality of the same name, it is a relatively small tributary of the Warta. There, it is suitable for fishing and, in spring and summer, canoeing. This offers different ways to enjoy nature: depending on your interests, time by the water can include fishing or seasonal canoeing.
For active recreation, there is a skate park at the central PKS bus stop on Chopina Street. It is part of the Zielona Sala Gimnastyczna leisure complex and includes skate park features such as rails, ramps and platforms. There is also a volleyball court and a small football pitch. In winter, the basketball court is used as an ice rink. Nearby, you will also find a table tennis table and facilities for chess and draughts. The activities on offer range from skateboarding and ball sports to table tennis and board games.
The sports complex built by the Gorzów Śląski municipality includes an event and sports hall, Orlik sports pitches and a beach volleyball court. The event hall at 13 Byczyńska Street has a permanent grandstand with 300 seats. When planning your trip, these sports and event facilities can be another reason to consider Gorzów Śląski as a destination, alongside its historic sights.
If you are looking for a holiday apartment, first consider what you would like your stay to focus on: churches and historic buildings, the Prosna, or sports and leisure facilities. Gorzów Śląski offers clearly distinct themes, without requiring you to limit yourself to just one kind of outing.
