The parish church of Saints Vitus, Modestus and Crescentia is Sierpc’s oldest architectural monument. Its oldest section probably dates from the first half of the 14th century. Its construction began in 1483 during an epidemic, at the presumed site of an apparition of the Virgin Mary to the cleric Andrzej of Sierpc; it was completed in 1488. The open-air museum and its origins
The history of the Muzeum Wsi Mazowieckiej w Sierpcu dates back to 1971. On 24 March that year, the Muzeum Etnograficzne was founded at the initiative of folk carvers from Sierpc and the surrounding area. They were looking for a place where they could meet and exhibit their work. The museum’s origins are thus connected with the carvers’ desire to exchange ideas and have a place to display their work. For culturally minded travellers, the open-air museum complements the themes of architectural history and urban life with the story of a museum founded through a local initiative.
Events and regional cuisine
At Children’s Day at the open-air museum of the Muzeum Wsi Mazowieckiej w Sierpcu on 7 June 2026, children could play with replicas of traditional rural toys and take part in pottery and weaving workshops. The event combined play activities with two traditional crafts. At “Wykopki w Skansenie” on 6 September 2026, traditional methods of harvesting potatoes were demonstrated.
The “Sierpecki Smak” competition was scheduled for 8 August 2026 at Osiedle Paderewskiego in Sierpc. Visitors were expected to be able to sample dishes prepared by rural women’s associations and regional specialities there.
