In Żyrardów, textile history comes to life in the cityscape and in several museums. The 19th-century factory settlement includes a workers’ settlement, a villa district for managers, as well as public and factory buildings. Together with the adjacent former factory sites, it now forms the historic centre. The entire factory settlement and the former industrial area cover about 70 hectares and are listed as a Pomnik Historii, or History Monument.

Textile history from different perspectives

The Muzeum Mazowsza Zachodniego focuses on the history of Żyrardów, its textile factories and the traditional material culture of the city’s residents. Its collection includes a permanent gallery of works by Józef Rapacki. A particularly notable exhibit is a panorama of Żyrardów from 1899, commissioned by the owners of Zakłady Żyrardowskie for the World’s Fair in Paris.

The Muzeum Lniarstwa im. Filipa de Girarda has a different focus: its main exhibition features dozens of historic machines and pieces of equipment from the former linen works. Together, they form a complete technological line—from processing textile raw materials to producing fabric. The museum is housed in the halls of a former printing works in the post-industrial Bielnik area, which once belonged to the Żyrardów factory complex. The city’s history and material culture are therefore presented in one museum, while the production process of the linen works is shown in the other.

Industrial architecture in the cityscape

The “Industrialny Żyrardów” industrial heritage trail offers a walk through the factory settlement. The settlement is not limited to residential buildings: it also includes public and factory buildings. Those interested in the town’s development can explore the buildings and museums as different ways of engaging with its industrial history.

One distinctive building is the Resursa, originally designed on the model of English clubs and reserved for the local elite. After its restoration, it regained its former splendour and once again became a lively cultural venue. In the ballroom, rich gilding and colourful wall paintings meet a Renaissance-style design with Classical elements.

Interactive stations and a central green space

The Multimedialny Ośrodek Tradycji i Edukacji Kulturowej, or MOTKa for short, is aimed at residents and tourists, particularly children and young people. An interactive model depicts Żyrardów’s historic factory settlement. Visitors use a wristband to activate multimedia stations in turn, where they can take on quiz questions, games and puzzles. For families with children, this offers a hands-on way to explore local history, distinct from viewing the historic machinery and buildings.

Karol August Dittrich Park offers a different perspective on the city: this nearly six-hectare green space lies in central Żyrardów, in the residential district of the factory settlement. Its naturalistic water system and numerous bridges shape the park. The town thus brings together several different attractions: industrial history, cultural offerings and a central green space.
