The Parish Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built in the Gothic style in 1399, funded by Janusz I the Elder, Duke of Masovia. Beside the church stands an 18th-century bell tower, 13 metres high and square in plan. The buildings date from widely separated periods: the church dates back to the Middle Ages, while the tower was built several centuries later. This site thus combines a Gothic church with a bell tower whose shape and height give it distinctive architectural features.
Another historical focus is the Forty Bema, a monument and mausoleum commemorating the 1831 Battle of Ostrołęka. They stand on the battlefield where the largest engagement of the November Uprising took place. The site previously housed a gunpowder magazine used by the Tsarist army; trenches surround the monument. Here, the focus is not on the construction of a religious building, but on the battlefield, remembrance and the site’s former use. Together with the parish church, it highlights the difference between architectural history and military history.
Another architectural highlight is the former monastery complex of the Church of Saint Anthony of Padua. It includes a Baroque church and a former monastery building with a courtyard. There is also a courtyard surrounded by cloisters, known as the Kalwaria. Unlike a single church building, this site brings together several buildings and courtyard spaces as parts of one complex.
Art, Music and Kurpie Culture
Galeria Ostrołęka is located at Plac Bema 14, in a former merchant’s house. The gallery hosts chamber concerts featuring classical music and jazz. It also offers courses in painting, drawing, printmaking and other artistic techniques for children, young people and adults. The Muzeum Kultury Kurpiowskiej is housed in a building erected in 1928, which formerly served as a post office. The exhibition “Ostrołęka i Kurpie. Między wątkiem historii a osnową życia” includes archival materials, objects connected with the people of Ostrołęka and the Kurpie region, excerpts from poems about Ostrołęka by Izrael Sztern, and multimedia content. Here, the history of the city and its links to the Kurpie region are presented through different forms of storytelling: documents, objects, poetry and multimedia.
