Discover Deszczno: History and Hiking Trails

Deszczno brings together a long history of settlement and specific hiking routes. Bronze Age finds tell of early settlement; churches and a monument mark further chapters in the town’s history. At the same time, two trails of different lengths pass through Deszczno or begin and end there. This gives the town a range of points of interest to consider when planning your trip.

Church history and early traces

Deszczno is one of the oldest settlements in the Toruń–Eberswalde Urstromtal. Settlement dating back to the Bronze Age, around 1800 to 1700 BC, is documented here. Two hoards of Bronze Age objects underscore the area’s early history. The finds include a bronze boss, an armlet, a pin, a necklace, and an axe. These individual objects give an abstract date range a tangible scale: they range from jewelry and personal items to a tool.

The town’s building history is also tied to specific dates. In 1839, a new church was built in Deszczno on the site of the former cemetery. The “Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross” was remodeled in 1892 and is listed in the register of monuments. Its history thus links an early church building with a later remodeling; its listing also marks its significance as a monument.

A Piast Eagle monument in Deszczno commemorates the soldiers of the Second Polish Army. Many of these soldiers settled here. The monument is therefore connected both with military history and with the subsequent settlement of the area. Together with the town’s earlier church and settlement history, it offers a multifaceted view of the past without reducing different eras to a single story.

The history of transport also has a precise date: the first train passed through Deszczno on December 1, 1896, on the route from Skwierzyna to Zamość. This historic journey is another chronological landmark in the town’s history. It describes the railway connection at the time and is distinct from the present-day hiking trails as a separate topic.

Two hiking trails, different scales

Green Hiking Trail No. 3 is 51.4 kilometers long and begins or ends at Deszczno station. It runs mostly along the Warta flood embankments and through the Gorzów Basin. Its described character is therefore shaped by longer stretches and a landscape along the embankments. Yellow Hiking Trail No. 10 runs from Borek through Deszczno, Karnin, Łagodzin, and Ulim to the embankment at Niwica. It is 18.9 kilometers long, technically easy, and offers a way to explore Deszczno. At kilometer 6.2, it reaches the beginning of a pedestrian and vehicle track in Deszczno.

The lengths make the difference between the two routes easy to compare: at 51.4 kilometers, No. 3 is considerably longer than No. 10 at 18.9 kilometers. Their described routes also have different emphases. Green Trail No. 3 focuses on the Warta flood embankments and the Gorzów Basin; the yellow trail passes through several named places and offers a way to explore Deszczno.
