Susiec: Trails, Waterfalls and History

Routes and walking times

The blue Szlak Szumów is a 17 km circular route that starts and ends at the railway station in Susiec. Allow about six hours to walk the full route, without taking the suggested shortcut via the yellow trail. On the nearby blue Szlak Szumów, about a 30-minute walk from the start, there is a 1.5 m-high waterfall on the Jeleń, protected as a natural monument. About an hour and a half's walk from the start, the trail passes a marshland overgrown with reeds, considered a bird habitat.

For planning a day out with children, the difference between the waterfall, about 30 minutes away, and the full circuit, which takes around six hours, offers a concrete guide to how much time to set aside. The yellow-marked Szlak Południowy is about 17 km long and runs from Susiec railway station via the Jeleń waterfall, the Nad Tanwią Nature Reserve, Rebizanty, Korkosze and Huta Szumy to Narol. The two routes are similar in length but differ in course: the blue Szlak is a circular route back to the station, while the yellow one leads to Narol.

Water, forest and views

The nearby Nad Tanwią Nature Reserve protects particularly valuable sections of the Jeleń and Tanew valleys, with rows of small waterfalls. Established in 1958, it covers about 41 ha and lies at an elevation of about 235 m above sea level. Waterfalls and river valleys give this protected area a different focus from the view from the Susiec observation tower: from there, you can see striped fields and the extensive Puszcza Solska forest complex.

In addition to the viewpoint at the tower, there is a bicycle shelter and benches. This makes it possible to combine nature destinations around Susiec with a viewpoint in town. Those particularly interested in birds can find another distinctive landscape feature at the marshland on the blue Szlak Szumów: the reed vegetation and its description as a bird habitat give this section of the trail its own character.

Places and cultural landmarks

Susiec is home to the historic Church of St John of Nepomuk. A monument to Kargul and Pawlak stands at the entrance to the town. Nearby cultural destinations include Wzgórze Kościółek, also known as Zamczysko: an earthwork rampart surrounds a castle site dating from the 12th to 13th centuries. A cross and a monument commemorate insurgents and partisans who hid there during the January Uprising and the last war. Wzgórze Kościółek can be reached from Susiec on foot in about an hour and a half via the blue Szlak Szumów.

Another destination for those interested in culture is the fire brigade museum in nearby Oseredek. It displays historic fire pumps, fire engines and uniforms. The tourist information office in Susiec is located in the Gminny Ośrodek Kultury. If you plan to use it, check in advance whether the service is available.

Activities and choosing where to stay

A kayaking trip can also be included as a separate outing: the kayaking route on the Tanew is about 3 km from Susiec. Where possible, a transfer is offered from the association's accommodation. This option is limited to the association's accommodation and is not offered as a general guarantee.

The circular route starts and ends in Susiec; the yellow route leads to Narol. The observation tower, church and monument offer a different focus from the waterfall, nature reserve and Wzgórze Kościółek. This lets you choose the focus of your holiday without having to plan every activity around the same type of route.
