Places of Remembrance and Historic Routes

Seventy elements of the camp infrastructure have been preserved at the former camp site in Lublin. The Germans built them between 1941 and 1944. The State Museum at Majdanek was established on part of the site of the former German Nazi concentration camp in Lublin.

The “Lublin Concentration Camp 1941–1944” historical route passes through the most important sites and structures of the former camp. Information boards are available in Polish, English and Hebrew. The surviving structures and stops along the route thus offer different ways to learn about the site’s history.

A free visitor app from the State Museum at Majdanek guides visitors through museums at the sites of former German Nazi concentration and extermination camps in Lublin, Bełżec and Sobibór. It also makes it possible to view Lublin’s landscape of remembrance in the context of the other two locations mentioned.

Old Town and Cultural Heritage

Lublin’s Old Town has a medieval street layout and richly decorated townhouses dating from several centuries. It is also included on Poland’s list of historic monuments. These features give the historic centre an architectural character shaped by different periods.

Those interested in the cityscape can therefore choose between focusing on the historic camp site and taking a themed look at Lublin’s architectural heritage.

Gardens, Landscapes and Active Days

The UMCS Botanical Garden was founded in 1965 and opened to the public in 1974. For more than 30 years, it has taken part in various projects to protect protected and endangered species of Polish flora, with a particular focus on the region’s flora. The garden thus combines a long history of development with a clear commitment to plant conservation.

The Lublin Open Air Village Museum also offers insight into the history of the landscape: it is located in the valley of the Czechówka River. A virtual tour of the museum shows how residents of villages and small towns around Lublin lived before the Second World War. Its real-world setting in the river valley and its digital glimpse into past ways of life offer different perspectives.

Lublin has 140 km of cycling paths, although this total may change over time. Near Słoneczny Wrotków at the Zalew Zemborzycki reservoir in Lublin, there are cycling paths, running routes, roller-skating paths and a kayaking route. Looking beyond the city of Lublin also reveals a variety of nature and cultural experiences. Bukowa Góra is 300 metres above sea level and is a strict nature reserve in Roztoczański National Park. The “Czahary” nature trail features observation towers, viewing platforms and covered shelters for visitors. Architecture enthusiasts can also visit the Old Town of Zamość, which retains its original rectangular street plan and parts of its surrounding fortifications. The Great Market Square is lined with arcaded merchants’ houses and dominated by the Town Hall.
