Biegoszów is a small village in the eastern Kaczawskie Foothills, also called the Złotoryja Foothills. It was established in the mid-14th century. An almost complete ensemble of residential and farm buildings has largely retained its original form, without major alterations. As a result, the village landscape and its traditional buildings take centre stage when you consider Biegoszów for a stay.

Valley, Forests and Village Ensemble

Biegoszów lies at an elevation of around 260 to 299 metres above sea level in a narrow valley formed by a left-bank tributary of the Wilcza. Spruce forests lie mainly to the south and east of the village, interspersed with beech and other deciduous tree species. Basalt quarries are also part of the immediate surroundings. These features give the place a distinct landscape setting: the valley, the named forest areas and the quarries each form a different part of its surroundings. If the village’s history matters to you as much as the landscape when looking for a holiday apartment, Biegoszów offers points of interest for both.

Buildings and Historical Traces

The preserved ensemble includes residential and farm buildings; its extensive preservation without major alterations makes the traditional form of the buildings a distinctive feature of the place. The former school building is also part of local history: it was marked on the cultural heritage project map. The map covered specific historic sites and offers a separate perspective on the village’s history, while the building itself is identified as a former schoolhouse.

As for its religious history, Biegoszów never had a church. Its residents belonged to the estates and parish of Nowy Kościół. At the same time, Biegoszów developed into an important centre of Protestantism. These aspects reveal different sides of the village’s history: its parish affiliation and its significance to Protestantism. In the 16th century, Biegoszów was also associated with a peasant uprising against the then lord of the manor, von Leist.

Insights into the History of the Surrounding Area

The cultural heritage project “Gozdno i Biegoszów – poznajemy dzieje, odkrywamy tajemnice” (Gozdno and Biegoszów – discovering their history and uncovering their secrets), documented in 2020, included an interactive walk through the villages. Mieczysław Hajder led participants to eight important sites connected with the history of Gozdno and Biegoszów. This brings several historic sites associated with the village into view alongside individual buildings. In the 18th century, copper ores were prospected in the vicinity of Biegoszów. This prospecting was connected with the development of mining and smelting in nearby Leszczyna. The history of mining can be considered part of the area’s story, while the preserved residential and farm buildings are directly part of the village ensemble.

Getting Your Bearings for Your Stay

A local road from Świerzawa to Wilków crosses the Biegoszów valley. There is currently no bus stop in the village that is in service. Keep these two details in mind when planning your accommodation and journey. Biegoszów has a distinctive character that can help you choose a holiday apartment: its valley setting, the forests south and east of the village, and its largely preserved historic buildings. This can help you decide whether you would like to focus your stay more on village history or the rural character of the place.
