Trails between nature and mining history

The “Synklina Leszczyny” trail is about 3 km long and includes 17 observation stations marked along the route. Numerous information boards and preserved monuments tell the story of former copper mining and copper smelting. You can also observe unique plant species along the trail. The route thus combines nature watching with a glimpse into copperworking and processing in the region.

The “Żelazny Krzyż” nature and culture trail in the Wilków forest has a different focus, with 12 boards or stations. The blue-marked Szlak Polskiej Miedzi passes through the Gmina Złotoryja and is 26 km long. The figures show the difference in scale: about 3 km for the themed trail in Leszczyna compared with 26 km for the Szlak Polskiej Miedzi. The routes have different names and descriptions, so their respective lengths can be a useful starting point when planning the kind of day trip you want.

Basalt landscape and natural monuments

Wilcza Góra Nature Reserve was established to protect an original arrangement of basalt columns resembling rose petals. The views from the reserve extend across large parts of the Kaczawa Foothills, the Kaczawskie Mountains, the Giant Mountains and the Silesian Lowland. An unusual geological feature and sweeping views across several landscapes come together here.

Geological features are also reflected in place names around Leszczyna: “Ciche Szczęście” and “Wapień Niecki Leszczyny” are inanimate natural monuments. Another landscape feature is Wilcza Jama, a 7 m-long rock overhang with a flat floor. Niedźwiedzia Jama is a 12 m-wide horizontal rock alcove. The different formations—an overhang and an alcove—offer a specific comparison if you are interested in the geology of the area.

The Chełmy Landscape Park includes Leszczyna. Within the Gmina Złotoryja, its buffer zone also includes Wilków, Rokitnica, Kozów, Kopacz, Łaźniki, Rzymówka, Prusice and Wysocko. The southern part of the gmina lies partly within this buffer zone. This geographical context complements the individual natural attractions without combining the different places into a single route.

Mining, buildings and historical traces

In Leszczyna, the Skansen Górniczo-Hutniczy features a reconstructed double furnace made up of two towers, as well as an Izba Tradycji Górniczych. Together with the boards and preserved monuments along the “Synklina Leszczyny” trail, these sites offer a clear focus on mining and smelting. If you are especially interested in the history of metal extraction, you can take these stops into account when choosing places to visit.

The “Zamkowe wzgórze w Rokitnicy” trail starts at a small car park beside the county road from Rokitnica to Prusice. It leads to the only surviving wall of the former castle; there is a picnic area there with covered wooden tables and a fire pit. In Rokitnica, the Church of St Michael the Archangel dates from the 13th century. Beyond the village is also an early medieval hillfort. Its rampart and ditch remains date mainly from the 4th to the 9th century AD. The church, castle wall and hillfort represent different historical connections that you can weigh separately when planning your trip.

When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to decide first what you want your trip to focus on: would you like to spend most of your time on marked trails, exploring the mining history of Leszczyna or visiting the historical sites in Rokitnica? This way, you can choose where to stay based on your planned priorities instead of treating different destinations as interchangeable just because of their name or theme.
