The palace complex was built around 1815. The term “Neoclassical” refers to an architectural movement inspired by ancient models. A naturalistic landscape park was laid out beside the palace between 1870 and 1880. Its different sections served different purposes: the area in front of the palace provided screening; behind the building was a rectangular lawn planted symmetrically with oaks. The park’s naturalistic character and the more geometrically defined lawn can be seen as two different design ideas.
There was also a small oval pond in front of the palace, which was later converted into a fire-water reservoir. More than 40 individual trees have survived on the estate. At the same time, the former course of the park paths is now only faintly discernible. Comparing the surviving trees with the barely visible path layout helps show why the park’s history should not be conflated with its present-day appearance.
Settlement Layout and Orientation
The historic rural settlement layout broadens the focus beyond the park and manor estate. It makes the form of the village itself—not just an individual building or garden—a subject of cultural history.
