Fortress and Underground Passages

The upper visitor route at Twierdza Kłodzko presents the history of the site from the 10th to the 20th century. Events from the Napoleonic Campaign are reenacted on the Stok bojowy. Below the entire Stok bojowy lies an underground defensive system of around seven kilometres. This figure describes the fortress system, not a single visitor route.

This is distinct from the underground tourist route “1000 Years of Poland Underground Tourist Route”. It was created in the 1960s in Kłodzko’s underground labyrinth and runs for about 600 metres from ul. Czeska at the foot of the fortress to ul. Zawiszy Czarnego. The roughly seven kilometres of the defensive system and the approximately 600 metres of the tourist route therefore refer to different things. On an underground tour in Kłodzko, city music, tavern-goers and fairground sounds also evoke the atmosphere of earlier city life.

Museum and Historic Architecture

The Muzeum Ziemi Kłodzkiej is housed in a Baroque building that was once a Jesuit college. Among its most significant collections are pewter, numismatics and Silesian clocks from the industrialisation period in Lower Silesia. Special glass is also represented, including works by artists who were active in the Ziemia Kłodzka region after 1945. The collections thus bring together different materials and historical contexts, rather than focusing on just one aspect of the city’s history.

At the same museum, you can visit medieval underground rooms more than six metres deep, which depict the everyday lives of Kłodzko’s former residents. Here, the focus is on daily life as well as the history of the fortress. This contrast offers a different perspective on the city’s underground sites than the defensive structures and the tourist route.

The Gothic bridge in Kłodzko was built to replace an earlier wooden bridge; according to a date that is not entirely certain, construction took place between 1281 and 1390. It is adorned with six votive figures. The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is Kłodzko’s oldest surviving church; its architecture and interior are primarily Late Gothic, with a particularly strong Baroque influence. The Marian Column also tells the city’s history: it is a votive offering commemorating the city’s deliverance from plague and fire, and recalls two tragic events that struck Glatz. The Rynek is an integral part of the historic old town. A 17th-century palace belonging to the Wallis family, originally from Ireland and Wales, also survives on ul. Czeska.
