Rawa Mazowiecka

Rawa Mazowiecka combines urban history with a variety of landscapes: the Muzeum Ziemi Rawskiej and the ruins of the Baszta Zamku Książąt Mazowieckich stand alongside a historic park on the Rawka and the forest-surrounded Zalew Tatar. Green spaces with a history

The historic town park, dating from the 19th century, lies on the Rawka. As far back as the time of the Duchy of Warsaw, it was considered one of the finest English-style parks. Today, the park combines landscaped green spaces with wild vegetation protected as part of a nature reserve; it is also notable for its high biodiversity. Across just over five hectares, different types of green space meet. If nature and parkland are important to you during your stay, this place is a distinct focus alongside visits to sites of cultural and historical interest.

During a revitalisation project in 2017–2018, paths were laid, a wooden bridge was restored and a playground was modernised. These works are part of the park’s history and show which features were taken into account during its renewal. The playground is a specific detail to consider when planning a trip with children; in addition, the park offers different experiences through its landscaped and protected natural areas.

Museum and historic buildings

The Muzeum Ziemi Rawskiej is a regional museum with five departments: archaeology, ethnography, history, numismatics and art. Its permanent exhibitions include “Wnętrze izby rawskiej z początku XX wieku” and “Gabinet numizmatyczny”. The two titles point to different ways of exploring regional history: a depiction of a living room from the early 20th century and a numismatic cabinet. If you enjoy exploring a range of cultural and historical topics while travelling, you can include these permanent exhibitions in your museum visit.

Another place to explore the town’s history is the Baszta Zamku Książąt Mazowieckich. The tower ruins are open to visitors in summer, from June to September, on Saturdays and Sundays from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. On other days of the week, organised groups can visit by prior arrangement with the Muzeum Ziemi Rawskiej. Jatki miejskie is a 19th-century building listed in the register of monuments. It underwent extensive renovation from 2018 to 2020 and was adapted for the Muzeum Ziemi Rawskiej. The building contains two workshop and education spaces: the Muzealna Pracownia Edukacji Regionalnej and the Pracownia Etnograficzna. The spaces are suitable for workshops and educational activities. Jatki miejskie thus complements the museum exhibitions with a place designed for practical and educational activities.

Zalew Tatar and cycling in the town

Zalew Tatar is a reservoir surrounded by forest, covering an area of more than 50 hectares. It offers a different landscape from the town park: here, the water and surrounding forest shape the setting, rather than landscaped green spaces and protected vegetation. When planning your trip, you can therefore consider whether you would especially like to explore parks and natural areas, or include the larger reservoir as well.

Cycling is also part of the town’s development. The first section of a cycling route project has been completed. The project is intended to create a connection from the Zamkowa Wola residential area to Zalew Tatar through the historic town centre; the completed section already makes cycling around town easier. For planning purposes, it is important to distinguish between the completed first section and the connection envisaged for the project as a whole.
