Opoczno lies on the Drzewiczka River in the Opoczyńskie Hills. A castle with a regional museum, churches of different architectural styles and a long tilemaking tradition give the town several cultural facets. The folklore of the wider region adds another dimension. Which of these interests you most may help determine the right base for your stay.

A castle as a place to explore regional history

The Regional Museum in Opoczno is housed in a castle dating from the 14th and 19th centuries, a medieval fortress associated with King Casimir the Great. The museum collects, preserves, conserves and presents cultural artefacts relating to the history, numismatics, archaeology, art and ethnography of the Opoczno region. Numismatics, the study of coins, complements the themes of history and archaeology; art and ethnography broaden the perspective on the culture of the Opoczno region.

The exhibition programme includes permanent exhibitions as well as temporary and travelling exhibitions. The museum also offers guided tours of its exhibitions. If you are planning a guided tour or have a particular exhibition topic in mind, check the current programme in advance. This allows you to plan your time around the subject that interests you most.

Churches, tiles and cultural heritage

The buildings also reflect different historical influences. St Bartholomew’s Church features Gothic elements. The wooden Church of St Mary Magdalene dates from the 18th century. Opoczno is also home to a former synagogue dating from the 18th century. These three buildings offer different points of interest if you are drawn to religious architecture and the town’s history.

Tilemaking is another part of the town’s history: over the course of about 150 years, Opoczno developed into a centre and an important location for this craft. In the wider Opoczyńskie region, musical traditions, dances and customs are part of the folklore, passed down through generations. Traditional costumes and handicrafts are also part of this cultural heritage. Opoczno folklore has been officially added to Poland’s national list of intangible cultural heritage. Opoczno ceramic tiles and Opoczno folklore are regarded as the region’s most important tangible and intangible heritage elements, respectively, and are collectively called “Opoczyńskie Dziedzictwo.”

Town life and events

The Municipal Cultural Centre in Opoczno operates a cinema, with screenings every Saturday and Sunday. Check the current schedule before visiting. For sports enthusiasts, a 2024 travel guide lists the Opoczno Run as an annual 10-kilometre race through the town’s streets, held in memory of a local female athlete. These details describe the event as presented in the guide; dates and arrangements may vary.

The 2024 travel guide also lists the regional festival of Christmas and shepherds’ carols, “Opoczyńskie Kolędowanie.” At the event in Opoczno, local folk singers perform, in particular, traditional songs. The Opoczno Easter Table Competition, where “Bab Wielkanocnych” are presented, is also listed in the 2024 guide. Alongside the museum and historic buildings, music, sport and a food-focused competition offer different ways to experience the town.

The town and municipality as distinct points of reference

If you would also like to explore nature, it is worth distinguishing between the town and its surrounding municipality. Spalski Landscape Park lies partly within the Gmina Opoczno and protects the valley of the Pilica River and adjacent areas of natural value. When planning a holiday apartment stay, it is therefore helpful to decide on your main focus first: are you looking for a base specifically for exploring Opoczno, or would you also like to include the wider municipality?
