Discover Poronin: Rivers, Landscape and Culture
Accommodation in Poronin
Poronin lies in a basin between the Pogórze Gliczarowskie and Pogórze Gubałowskie hills. Rivers, regional history and Gorale culture give the town its own distinct character. When choosing a holiday apartment, consider which of these aspects you would most like to discover on your trip: the landscape around Poronin, its culture, or both.
A town between hills and rivers
Poronin lies at an elevation of 740 to 800 metres above sea level. Since the early 17th century, the town has been situated in the basin between Pogórze Gliczarowskie and Pogórze Gubałowskie, along the Poroniec, Zakopianka and Biały Dunajec rivers. The Biały Dunajec begins at the confluence of the Zakopianka and Poroniec. These geographical features give the local landscape a clear framework: when planning your trip, you can use both the hills and the rivers as reference points for your stay.
Poronin is seven kilometres northeast of Zakopane. Your choice of where to stay therefore comes down first to the starting point you prefer and the interests you want to shape your stay.
Regional history and Gorale culture
The School Museum of History and Regional History has been housed in the Legions Polskich Primary School building in Poronin since 2015. Around 800 exhibits focus on the history of Poronin and Podhale, Gorale culture, regionalism and people associated with Poronin. The subject matter thus ranges from local history to regional traditions and the people connected with the town.
The museum is open to visitors Monday to Friday from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm. Visits at other times can be arranged in advance by telephone with the school management. If you would like to include a museum visit in your stay, these opening hours will help you plan your day; advance arrangements are required for visits outside the regular hours.
Another cultural venue is Wańkówka, a historic, listed building of architectural, artistic and historical value. The house serves a public function: it accommodates the Municipal Information Centre, the Municipal Cultural Centre, the Municipal Library, the Podhalan Association and the “Regle” Gorale Ensemble. If you are interested in local culture and public institutions, you will find several different connections to life in Poronin here.
The 51st Poroniańskie Lato was scheduled to take place from 22 to 26 July 2026 on the grounds of the Municipal Cultural Centre in Poronin. The planned programme combined regional traditions with a wedding in the Gorale style, a competition for the most beautiful braid and meetings with folk artists.
Activities and routes as travel interests in their own right
A twelve-metre-high climbing wall is located on the tower of the Poronin Volunteer Fire Brigade. It may only be used under the supervision of qualified personnel and by prior arrangement; you must bring your own equipment. If you plan to include climbing in your holiday, take these conditions into account and prepare accordingly.
Routes are also mentioned in different contexts. Wańkówka lies on a recreational trail that runs from Poronin to Liptovská Kokava via Wołowiec. In addition, a combined tourism product was planned as a route: it was to run from Liptovská Kokava through the Chochołowska and Jamnicka high valleys, Kościelisko, Butorowy Wierch and Gubałówka to the Tourist Information Centre in Poronin, connecting mountain trails with cycling routes. This was a plan, not a description of a route that was already available.
Choosing Poronin as your base
A railway line runs through Poronin. The town is also traversed by National Road 47, which connects Zakopane with Kraków, and international road 961, which runs towards the former Polish-Slovak border crossing near Łysa Polana. These routes are useful reference points when comparing Poronin with other places or planning your journey. In themselves, they do not indicate specific travel times or connections.
When choosing a holiday apartment, you can therefore start by deciding what matters most to you: if regional history and landscape are your priorities, the museum and the town’s location offer useful starting points for planning your trip. If you are more interested in cultural institutions, traditions or an activity such as climbing, you can also take these into account when choosing where to stay. Poronin thus combines clear geographical reference points with several distinct cultural and active pursuits.
