Churches and Traces of Several Centuries
Lipno’s oldest historic building is a Gothic church from the second half of the 14th century; its construction was completed in 1388. Several periods are also represented in the surviving town plan, which dates from the 14th as well as the 18th and 19th centuries. The town hall stands on the central market square, now called Plac Dekerta. It was built in 1836 in the Late Classical style. Together, these buildings and the town plan offer different insights into the town’s historical development, without reducing Lipno’s history to a single century.
Other distinct landmarks in the town’s architectural history include the Parish Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, with its Mannerist main altar and a painting by Wojciech Gerson, as well as the Evangelical-Augsburg Church. The latter is a brick Neo-Gothic building constructed between 1865 and 1868. There is also a Neo-Gothic chapel from 1837 in the cemetery. It stands on the site of the former Church of St Barbara, which was demolished in 1819. Those interested in religious architecture can view these examples as different expressions and layers of the town’s history.
Pola Negri, Cinema and Local Culture
Lipno’s film history is closely connected with Pola Negri: she was born in Lipno on 3 January 1897 as Apolonia Chalupec, also known in Poland as Apolonia Chałupiec. Most of the town’s museum exhibits are housed in the Izba Muzealna, in the building of the Miejskie Centrum Kulturalne. They include Poland’s largest collection of mementos of Pola Negri. This makes it a distinct focus for a cultural itinerary, alongside the historic buildings.
The “Nawojka” cinema is also part of the Miejskie Centrum Kulturalne and is located at ul. Mickiewicza 33. A black-and-white frieze depicting Charlie Chaplin and Pola Negri can be seen on its wall. The cinema hosted the annual film event “Pola i inni” for lovers of classic cinema and screen stars. The Miejskie Centrum Kulturalne is also the main or co-organiser of recurring events, including the “LIPA” rock festival. At the motocross track, the “Jastrząb” Sports Club organises international motorcycle events. In Lipno, film, music and motorsport offer different interests to explore.
Green Urban Spaces and Events
In Miejski Park im. Gabriela Narutowicza stand the “Dąb Wolności” and a garden pavilion dating from 1924. The park is listed in the register of immovable monuments as a 19th- and 20th-century park; the register information is current as of 31 December 2012, and the registration number is 327/A. In addition, as part of a project, pocket parks with recreation areas, educational and recreational features, and plantings were created at six locations: ul. Bulwarna, ul. Ekologiczna, ul. Wiśniowa, ul. Bukowa, ul. Dolna and the town pond. The Mień River flows through Lipno in its middle course. The Wiesław Witecki Stadium, opened in 1934, is also part of the town’s history.
