Town Hall, Views and City History
Kalisz Town Hall was built between 1920 and 1925. Its tower is more than 50 metres high and offers views across the city. The multimedia exhibition extends across the basement rooms, the third-floor corridor before the entrance to the tower, and the levels of the Town Hall tower. It ends at an observation terrace. In this way, it links several stops inside the Town Hall with views over Kalisz.
Another cultural highlight is the National Sanctuary of Saint Joseph. Pope Paul VI elevated it to the status of a minor basilica in 1978. The Muzeum Okręgowe Ziemi Kaliskiej was founded to collect and permanently preserve the natural and cultural heritage of Kalisz and the Kalisz region.
Reconstructions at the Archaeological Reserve
At the “Kaliski Gród Piastów” Archaeological Reserve, an entrance gate with a palisade, pointed stakes and a bridge over the moat has been reconstructed. The complex also includes seven reconstructed dwellings. They represent a saddler, a castellan, a weaver’s widow, a servant, a knight, a blacksmith and a potter. The range of occupations depicted gives the tour several specific themes: crafts, everyday life and social roles are presented side by side.
The reserve’s regular open-air programme includes the “Jarmark Archeologiczny,” held in June. This seasonal offering complements the reconstructed buildings with a dedicated event. Parks, Walks and Water Activities
Przyjaźni Park is located between Polna, Skalmierzycka and Sułkowskiego Streets and Szlak Bursztynowy. It covers more than 11 hectares. The park has five ponds with fish and wild ducks; the ponds are connected by dams or separated by bridges. Two playgrounds, an amphitheatre, sports fields, tennis courts and a street-workout area complete the facilities. As well as opportunities to observe nature, the park offers a range of recreational and physical activities.
For a walk through Kalisz, the “Szlak Ciekawej Architektury Kalisza” is a route about 5.5 kilometres long. The Kaliski Szlak Wiewiórek combines recreation, education and sightseeing, inviting you to explore the city actively. At Przystań Kalisz, you can rent pedal boats, kayaks and SUP boards on the Prosna and see Kalisz from the water.
