Audnedal invites you to discover nature and regional history together: Along the long hiking trails, you’ll encounter traces of earlier ways of life, while museums and churches offer further insights into the past. The area also boasts a varied landscape, particularly evident in the Audna Valley. When choosing your holiday apartment, you can start by asking yourself whether hiking, cultural history, or a combination of both will be the focus of your trip.

Valley, Lake and Summit

Near Konsmo, the narrow Audna Valley shapes the landscape. At Viblemo and between Konsmo and Ytre Øydnevatn, it broadens into larger, continuous areas of farmland. This contrast between the narrow valley and open expanses gives the area its own distinctive character. If experiencing the landscape is your main reason for visiting, Heddehei is a prominent landmark: at 578 metres, it is Audnedal’s highest peak.

Byremoparken, a municipal recreation area with a long sandy beach and accessible visitor facilities, lies at the northern end of Øvre Øydnavann. In southern Audnedal, you’ll also find Gislefossen, a small waterfall that has long been known for good fishing. The two places offer different natural attractions for planning your trip: the recreation area by the lake and the waterfall, with its connection to fishing.

Hiking with Different Areas of Focus

The Barnevandrerstien runs through Audnedal and is 136 kilometres long in total. The fully marked route is divided into seven stages suitable for day hikes. When planning, you can therefore choose between the full route and individual day stages, while keeping the total length of the trail in mind. Barnevandrersenteret in Konsmo is a natural stop for anyone hiking part of the Barnevandrerstien.

At Barnevandrersenteret, three small rooms with information and photographs tell the story of local child migrants. The exhibition also describes how people in Vest-Agder lived and learned to survive more than 100 years ago. If you’re particularly interested in the history of hiking and past living conditions, you can include this visit as a cultural highlight of your trip.

Another historic route is Nordmannsvegen. It served as a route for priests, livestock, child migrants and local people from Grindheim, Eiken and Fjotland. Its different former functions show that the route was used for a range of purposes by different groups. As part of a hiking trip, you can explore not only the Barnevandrerstien but also a route with a varied history of use.

The climb to Heddehei passes the Flottorp molybdenum mine. The terrain is partly rough and includes some elevation changes; these conditions are worth considering when deciding whether this hike fits your planned itinerary. If you’d rather focus less on summits and trails, you can instead explore museums, churches or the landscape around Øvre Øydnavann.

Museums, Churches and Traces of the Past

Det Gamle Posthuset in Konsmo is a local history museum with an exhibition section about the construction of the railway. The building is made of timber; the residential house was built around 1750. It opens during the summer season, from mid-June to mid-August. A visit offers a specific insight into both a historic home and the history of railway construction.

Sveindal Museum also looks at earlier ways of life: it has been used as a museum since 1925 and displays objects relating to living conditions and everyday life several centuries ago. The churches in Grindheim and Konsmo offer a different perspective on architectural history. Grindheim kirke was completed in 1783; this wooden cruciform church has a particularly distinctive, well-preserved interior. Konsmo kirke was completed in 1802 and is also a wooden cruciform church.

At Ytre Ågedal, signs point out archaeological finds from the Migration Period and preserved burial mounds. Flottorp has visible traces of mining; the cultural environment also includes the designated cultural landscapes of Øvre Flottorp and Ytre Flottorp. Together with the museums and churches, these sites offer a wide range of historical topics, from everyday life in the past to archaeological sites.

Audnedal as a Starting Point for Your Trip

Experiences in Audnedal range from a multi-day hiking route and a more challenging climb to museums and historic buildings. This variety can help you choose a holiday apartment: consider which themes you want to focus on during your trip and make your choice accordingly.
