Audnedal can be explored through a variety of traces: marked hiking stages, historic routes, churches and places of remembrance tell stories of different eras and ways of life. River landscapes and places with a history of agriculture or mining are also part of the region. When planning your holiday, it helps to ask a simple question: should you focus more on outdoor activities, nature or culture? The answer can help you choose a holiday rental close to the places you would like to get to know better.

Hiking and the history of the routes

The Barnevandrerstien offers a practical way to plan hikes: the fully marked trail is 136 km long and divided into seven stages suitable for day hikes. One section starts at Konsmo Church. The section from Konsmo to Laudal also starts there and runs mainly along an old country road built in 1846. If you are planning a trip that includes longer hikes, you can use these details to plan your stages; individual sections can also be a focus in their own right.

The Nordmannsvegen offers a different perspective on the region’s routes. This historic east–west connection was built between 1830 and 1850 and follows an older bridle path. It served as a route for priests, a cattle-driving route, a children’s walking route and a connection to the town. The route therefore represents not only travel, but also a variety of uses in the past. For families interested in history, it adds a storytelling dimension to the hiking routes: it also offers insight into the roles a route could play in everyday life.

In Konsmo, the Barnevandrersenteret is dedicated to the child migrants of Agder. The museum and exhibition building gives the subject its own cultural space. The Barnevandrerstien and the museum appeal to different interests: outdoors, a marked route divided into day stages; in town, an exhibition building about the history of the child migrants.

Churches, mining and cultural heritage

Konsmo Church is a listed wooden cruciform church completed in 1802. Grindheim Church dates from 1783 and is known for its distinctive, well-preserved interior. Those interested in churches and historic interiors will find two concrete examples here, completed in different years. Another cultural and historical trace leads to Flottorp: its cultural heritage area is founded on visible traces of mining and includes the priority cultural landscapes of Øvre Flottorp and Ytre Flottorp.

Several other examples of working history can be found in Sveindal. Hanekilen has a sawmill and two mills, which are considered important cultural monuments. The Bognevannslia iron ore mine is also cited there as an important cultural monument. Sveindals kirkevei was in use until 1879. These places and routes offer different ways to explore the past: through processing and mills, mining or a church route that was once in use.

Gamle Posthuset is used as a local history museum and includes an exhibition about railway construction in the municipality. The main building is believed to have been built around 1750. The Audnedal stasjon–Øydneskleiv cultural heritage area also includes a preserved country road between Øydneskleiv and Valand, with a bridge at Øydneskleiv. Here, railway history, older buildings and a preserved route each offer a different perspective.

River landscapes and getting here

The landscape can also be explored through specific places. The Audna rises in Grindheimsvatnet in Audnedal. The river runs past Konsmoparken in Konsmo, a state-protected recreation area designed for play, exercise, outdoor activities and relaxation. Gislefossen on the Audna has long been known for its good fishing. Near Sveindal, the Mandalselva has deposited larger areas of land suitable for agriculture. Ytre Øydnevatn is shaped by a different geological feature: the terminal moraine Raet dams it up.

For rail travel, Audnedal station is a useful reference point on the Sørlandsbanen. Trains run from there towards Kristiansand, Stavanger, Oslo S and Arendal. When preparing to search for a holiday rental, you can first decide on your interests and the associated place names: hiking stages and the museum in Konsmo, cultural monuments in Sveindal, or landscapes and traces of historic routes at the other places mentioned. These facts offer a range of starting points without prescribing any one focus for your holiday.
