Skien combines cultural history with experiences on the water and a wide range of outdoor activities. At Brekkeparken, an open-air museum, a manor house and a modern museum with changing exhibitions come together. You can also take trips on the Telemark Canal, follow cultural trails and enjoy activities at Skien Fritidspark. This lets you tailor your stay to your interests—from historical insights to getting active and exploring outdoors.

Explore history at Brekkeparken

The farmhouses at Brekkeparken tell the story of Telemark’s cultural history and showcase past living conditions and building traditions. The manor house Søndre Brekke offers another historical connection: it was home to Niels Aall, who was a minister in 1814. Guided tours are available through the manor house’s main building, the park’s farmhouses and the new museum building. If you would like to learn more about the buildings and their history, you can add a guided tour to your visit. The Søndre Brekke estate offers views of central Skien, the Skienselva River and the Telemark Canal. A playground adds to the park’s amenities.

Take to the Telemark Canal

You can discover the Telemark Canal on a boat trip from Skien. The canal boats M/S Victoria and M/S Henrik Ibsen travel between Skien and Dalen. Day trips and boat tours with overnight stays are available from Skien. The canal route is also defined by its locks: eight lock complexes with a total of 18 chambers raise boats and passengers by 72 metres on the stretch from Skien to Dalen. This makes a canal cruise a distinct option when planning your trip; depending on how much time you have, you can choose a day trip or a tour with an overnight stay.

The modern fish ladder in central Skien offers a different perspective on the water. It is designed for universal access and allows endangered and other important aquatic species to bypass the power plants in the city centre and reach their natural spawning and nursery grounds upstream. The fish ladder is also a highlight of the popular “Bryggevannet rundt” walking route. It makes a suitable destination for schools and families, as well as for people interested in freshwater biology and river ecosystems.

Cultural trails and a remarkable natural history

The cultural trail begins at Bakkestranda in central Skien. Another way to combine culture and exercise is the Skotfoss Trail: this 3.7-kilometre cultural walk starts at the Løveid locks and features 15 illustrated information boards. The two routes have different starting points, so each can be explored as a separate outing.

Kapitelberget is a popular area for recreation and walks. It is home to the ruins of a 12th-century crypt church and a protected fossil coral reef dating back 430 million years. Visitors interested in historic buildings will find a different way to explore the past here than at the buildings of Brekkeparken; the coral reef adds a glimpse into the history of the Earth.

Active days at Skien Fritidspark

Skien Fritidspark has trails for both short walks and longer training hikes. The illuminated, wheelchair-accessible trails are 1 kilometre, 2.5 kilometres and 5 kilometres long. There are also four adapted rest areas along the illuminated trail. These different options make it possible to fit either a shorter loop or a longer hike into your day.

The climbing park also offers a variety of challenges, with seven courses of different difficulty levels and a 220-metre double zipline. The climbing park’s longest zipline is accessible to people with disabilities. In winter, the activity park at Skien Fritidspark becomes a 12,000-square-metre ice-skating rink. Other activities available to book include a nature trail or quiz, as well as an outing to a shelter with lunch outdoors.

When choosing a holiday rental, you can consider which of these experiences you want to shape your stay: culture and architectural history, a trip along the canal or active time outdoors. If you would also like to discover other destinations, find Kviteseid and Drangedal here.
