Kviteseidbyen lies at the head of the fjord and combines a waterside setting with a lively town centre. Situated on the Telemark Canal and Route 41, the town is a centre for trade and services; cafés, shops and local craftspeople shape what it has to offer. A stay in this destination can therefore bring together different interests: time by the water, a glimpse of local culture and outings to events or attractions.

When choosing a holiday rental, the focus you want for your stay may be decisive: would you like to soak up the atmosphere and amenities of the town centre, or also include cultural destinations nearby in your plans? Kviteseid offers more than one way to spend your days, and not all the experiences have the same character.

Discover the fjord and Telemark Canal

From Kviteseidbyen, you can take a scheduled passenger boat or your own boat and travel through beautiful scenery and several lock systems all the way to the sea. This gives you two options for a trip on the water: a scheduled passenger boat or your own boat. If you would like to make the water and scenery the focus of your trip, you can include this tour in your plans.

The water is also part of the town’s character: Kviteseidbyen has a waterfront area with boat moorings at the guest harbour. Kviteseid Bryggekafè serves food and drinks right by the water next to Kviteseid Guest Harbour throughout the summer. This gives you a specific place to stop for a summer meal, while leaving open the choice of spending your time by the shore or out on the water.

Park, art and history

Bryggeparken was Kviteseid’s millennium site. The park contains many works of art and memorials, as well as a playground and an outdoor stage. This makes it a destination in its own right, combining art and memorials with a place to play and a venue for events.

Nearby is Kviteseid bygdetun, one of Norway’s oldest open-air museums. Founded in 1907, it comprises a collection of twelve buildings moved here from various farms. Utsondhalli showcases the sculptor Gunnar Utsond, and there are also changing exhibitions. If you are interested in art and rural architectural history, you will find a different cultural focus here than in the park.

Also nearby is Kviteseid gamle kyrkje, a stone parish church dating from the late 12th century and dedicated to Saint Olav. During the summer season, guided tours of the church are available during Kviteseid bygdetun’s opening hours. You can therefore plan your church visit to coincide with a visit to the museum, if you would like to take a guided tour.

Events throughout the year

The Victoriafestivalen takes place in Kviteseid every year in mid-June. It features activities for all age groups, music and cultural performances. If you plan your trip around this event, it offers an occasion where different generations can each pursue their own interests. Music and culture provide a different focus from a trip along the canal or a visit to the historic buildings.

Kviteseidmarken takes place every year in mid-February in Kviteseidbyen. It features cultural performances, market stalls and a lively social scene. Compared with the Victoriafestivalen, it takes place at a different time of year and has its own distinctive focus on market stalls. The two events may therefore appeal to different ideas of what should shape a trip.

There is also an option for exploring actively: a varied cycling tour in Telemark can start in Kviteseid town centre. If you enjoy combining culture, water and exercise, you can choose which of these options to make the focus of your trip.

More destinations to consider for your trip: Skien and Drangedal.
