Kragerø is shaped by an archipelago of 495 islands, islets and skerries. Further out along the coast lies Jomfruland National Park, a marine national park covering 117,000 mål and stretching for 27 kilometres. Kelp forests, seagrass meadows, soft seabeds and shell sand are part of its geologically distinctive coastal and marine landscape. If you want to combine nature and culture when choosing a holiday apartment, you can focus on the kinds of activities you want to enjoy each day: the islands and the water, walking trails or Kragerø’s cultural offerings.

Among the Skerries, the Sea and the Coastal Path

There are various activities to enjoy in Jomfruland National Park and the archipelago: boating, kayaking, hiking, cycling on designated roads, birdwatching, diving and fishing. This makes it possible to tailor your stay to your interests rather than planning the same kind of day every day. Kragerø is also part of the Gea Norvegica Geopark, with Jomfruland among its developed visitor sites.

The Coastal Path is another point of reference for hikes. It runs from Fossing to Ellingsvika and is 42 kilometres long in total. A section between the centre of Kragerø and Stabbestad is covered by ferry. This ferry crossing is therefore part of planning the route. When choosing your accommodation, you can consider whether the Coastal Path, the archipelago or a cultural programme is the main focus of your trip—without combining these destinations into a single route.

Jomfruland: Ferry Trips, Lighthouses and Nature

Ferries from Kragerø call at Jomfruland daily. The island has two lighthouses, showcasing engineering from different eras and illustrating the development of Norwegian lighthouse architecture. The old brick tower has 89 steps to the top. This is a notable feature for anyone interested in lighthouses and how they are built.

Tårntjernet is the largest lake on Jomfruland; the paths there are accessible to wheelchair users. There are also five Kystled cabins in the archipelago. On Jomfruland, the guest harbour provides water and electricity. If you prefer a boat tour to planning an excursion yourself, you can consider the day trips from Kragerø Taxibåt to Jomfruland National Park, accompanied by a local guide. This makes it possible to plan the island as a main focus for a nature excursion.

Coastal Culture and Art in Kragerø

The Berg-Kragerø Museum presents several aspects of local history: coastal culture, ice exports during the age of sailing ships and Edvard Munch’s artistic life in Kragerø. The museum includes nature trails, a park area, a café, a museum shop, a bathing beach and a boat landing. If you would like to explore art in the town, there is also the signposted “In Edvard Munch’s Footsteps” trail. It features reproductions of Munch’s Kragerø motifs. Several galleries and exhibition venues add to the cultural offerings.

A historical detail is also part of the townscape: in 2016, historic street-name signs were put up in Kragerø to mark the town’s 350th anniversary. Norway’s philosophy festival På Kanten opens the festival season in early June. The Kragerø Harbour Festival takes place in August, while the Barnegospelfestivalen at Kragerøhallen brings the festival season to a close. These events offer different cultural attractions to consider when planning the timing of your trip.
